I agree, this thread is for out of date transfers, subpar audio and blinking Ewoks.

Am I the only one who likes the blinking Ewoks? I'm not down with the magic R2D2 Tattooine rock and the recycled "Noooooooooo!", but blinking Ewoks? Shrug. Not an issue.

It's something that Lucas always wanted to do and was frustrated that he couldn't using the tech of the time (from Rinzler's 'making of' book) so I'm not surprised and/or outraged by that particular change. But when I get to Jedi's end battle and see that there's still loads of garbage mattes surrounding the ships, I'd have given up every one of those blinking little bastards to have those extraordinary pieces of VFX look as good as they possibly could.

That's my single biggest issue with Lucas' changes -- the visual ones, anyway -- that he didn't fix the things that were wrong with the effects he already had, before adding more.

Yes, exactly. Even the 2004 DVD revisions still did several things to improve the technical quality of certain things, like the hinky forced perspective in the Death Star cell bay or the newer CG Jabba in the hangar (which I really like, as it goes) but for the 2011 Blu-rays it felt like more of an exercise in Lucas pulling things out of his behind just because he could.

We didn't need to have dodgy CG rocks put in front of Artoo, we didn't need to have the Krayt dragon scream changed again, we didn't need to have the Ewoks blink, we didn't need to have Artoo's bunker freak-out get changed, we didn't need to have the wider shot of the door of Jabba's Palace, we didn't need to have the "Nooo...NOOOOOOOOooooOOOO" at the end. If they'd have devoted all that time and energy on finally fixing up the iffy mattes in the end battle of Jedi I'd have been one VERY happy camper.

I may get pilloried for this, and deservedly so...but I've used pro tools to calibrate my contrast and brightness settings since I was 22 years old, and...no, I don't see the garbage mattes. Yeah, they're certainly evident depending on your settings, but...just saying. It's possible -- possible, not criticizing or making assumptions -- your contrast and brightness settings might need a tweak.

It's only a few shots here and there.

Example: When the Falcon is inside the Death Star II and they "split up", there are very noticable mattes around the TIEs.

I thought you said before that you simply set the brightness of space to match the letterbox bars? Some "pro tool" that is.

I've got several check discs including Spears & Munsil, DVE, AVS and GCD and I can assure you my brightness and contrast are properly set. Actually, I must confess that I already have my black level set one click below where it should be just because I like having an extra lil' dab of darkness. And yet, those garbage mattes during the Jedi battle are still plain as day.

BTW I'm NOT saying that they're there in every shot but the ones in the shot that Pete mentioned are some of the most blatant examples I've ever seen of this artefact in any movie on any disc. There's also one around Endor when the Rebels first arrive and the planet appears on the screen in front of them, the small forest moon has an obvious grey box chugging along with it.

A transfer itself with the proper brightness/gamma levels would greatly ameliorate these issues (like the terror dog escaping from the building in Ghostbusters, the travelling matte is as blatant as **** on the old Blu-ray but virtually invisible on the darker 4K transfer), never mind any outright digital fixes.

That's the way I did it before I learned how to use those fun color bars. Man, you've got a hell of a memory, Geoff. You should go into tax law. You'd be scary.

The most annoying thing to me is after all these CG tweaks there are still matte lines around a lot of ships, especially in Empire and Jedi. And that's on my old calibrated TV and my new TV set to 2.2 gamma. Still super obvious. If I were tweaking my old movie with CG that would be the first thing I worked on.

Yep, the garbage mattes, particularly in ROTJ are still easily spotted.

I've posted before, the Empire & Jedi SEs were a last minute decision, originally it was going to be the original STAR WARS that got the treatment. They simply didn't have time to recomposite every problem shot.

Yes I know, they shouldn't have wasted time with the Jedi Rocks number...

That's true enough Pete, but it ain't 1997 any more. With all the time & money spent on the myriad of extra fixes for both the 2004 and 2011 versions, they couldn't be bothered to fix the garbage mattes while they were at it? Harrumph, sirs!

This is George Lucas! He mainly only cares about fixing things that don't need fixing and changing things that were better the first time around. He can't be bothered with unimportant things like matte lines!

Any idea what is the difference between the Complete Sage US box sets with UPCs 024543243090 and 024543742180? I find both as exactly same on Amazon when I search the UPC....in br.com database, I can only find the edition 024543742180...can someone help with what the other 024543243090 is and what are the differences between the two?

Ironically, the real can of worms opened wasn't really from the fixes but from the changes.

If all he ever did was even out the blacks, fix the garbage mattes and maybe the light sabers I doubt many fans would have been upset.

Adding in a whole new Jedi rocks music number and even shooting addition footage years later with a set, actors and costumes must take way more time and effort than just repairing garbage matte boxes.

PRIORITIES!

This George Lucas quote makes me want to throw up:

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition]."

I consider this to be hate speech!

People who are actual victims of hate speech would find your statement highly offensive.
