This is exactly what i foresee happening. Still better than nothing.

This is in no way a confirmation of the unaltered original trilogy being released, but it is interesting:

On iTunes and other digital music outlets, you can no longer buy the expanded special edition versions of the original trilogy soundtracks. Only the newly remastered versions of the original soundtrack releases are for sale.

Also, the album art for each soundtrack now matches the art used for the digital copies of the movies.

Lastly, the copyright of the soundtracks now say "2017 Lucasfilm Ltd." instead of Sony.

As someone on another board pointed out, we are now in a unique and ironic moment in time where you can only buy the original unaltered versions of the soundtracks with Lapti Nek and Yub Nub but can't buy the original unaltered versions of the movies, and where you can only buy the special editions of the movies, but can't buy the special edition versions of the soundtracks.

It'll happen someday, who knows maybe this year, but I won't actually believe it until there is some kind of official press release.

You know that HD/4k restorations of the Original Trilogy exists. It's a damn shame they'll never be released to the public.

I'm sure Disney know it would be the BD release of the decade and it WILL happen. The only question is when.

I believe it will happen this year, but only with the original film. The others will follow on their 40th Anniversaries and then a big box for the 50th of the original film....a box that will also include all of the Disney productions.

2027 for a blu-ray box set? I don't know if Blu-Ray will be around by then. Shoot, I don't know if I'll be around by then.

The original trilogy hasn't been released individually in literally decades (even when in individual packages, they've come out at the same time). I think Disney/Fox would know better than to pull something like that.

Off the top of my head I think the last time they were not released simultaneously (in the US) would've been the initial letterboxed laserdiscs.

Like I said, even when they've come out in individual packages, they were released at the same time. The last time one came out apart from the others was probably Return of the Jedi's initial video release in 1986.

EDIT:

Same here. Got my hopes up too many times... but IF this pans out, when? May the fourth? May 25? Christmas? Either May date makes sense for the anniversary, but both are too close to the April Rogue One release. Maybe a short theatrical rerelease in May, followed by the Blu later in the year?

Dammit, now my hopes are up again...

I'd take any day that ends with "Y", personally. I only bought the 2011 set for the bonus features discs, so I'd like to be able to watch the Original Trilogy on BD without vomiting one of these days.

It would also be nice if they threw in the "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" as well, as that was the only one of the four vintage hour-length documentaries not included in the 2011 set. Of course there were two obvious reasons is that it didn't make it onto BD:

1) It heavily features the puppets that were unceremoniously replaced with "Jedi Rocks" in the SE of ROTJ, along with Sebestian Shaw as a Force-ghost.
2) It contains this quote from circa-1983 George Lucas, which is exceedingly ironic given everything that he did from 1997 onwards:

"Special effects are just a tool, a means of telling a story. People have a tendency to confuse them as an end to themselves. A special effect without a story is a pretty boring thing."

It was no accident that FSWTJ was left off the box set and didn't even get officially uploaded onto their YouTube channel until after Lucasfilm's sale to Disney in late 2012. It would be nice to get it on an BD release, as the highest-quality format available is from the 1995 Japanese CLV LD box set, which I do own.

I wonder if these will still be remastered or just a new scan of the Laserdisc versions.
Also I wonder is these will contain fixes like the mate lines.

I didn't realize it was on the official channel. That's good to know; thanks!

No problem. The unfortunate part is that they uploaded it in nine separate parts, though.

Here's the LINK to Part 1, to save you some time...

I saw all the Star Wars films projected by laser during the SW Marathon December 2015. All of them, which was then followed by Episode VII. That was brutal, I'll never do that again. Oh, the masters were the 2k Blu-Ray masters. The last time I saw the original Star Wars on screen was 1992, on a double-bill with Raiders.

There's no way they're going to release the non-anamorphic laserdisc masters on Blu-Ray. IF it happens, and I'm still dubious, it will be the new restored version Rian talked about when exploring the LucasFilm archives. Now, since we're playing wish-list sandbox, I'd love to see the 3D versions produced for the Prequels, IF they are included at all.
