So many digital questions on this blu-ray forum. Anyway, they re-released the set like last year without them, after the digital versions existed. I don't think they'll change that strategy until perhaps new actual discs are released.

Maybe not until they get distribution rights to the original film.

Why does everyone want Disney to own IV?

Can't we all be happy that it's still with Fox? Sorry, I had to get it off my chest.

I want Disney to have control so I can add it to the Disney Movies Anywhere App.

Wasn't there some leak recently that New Hope might soon be added to DMA?

Not a leak, it now appears on DMA with the words "currently unavailable".

I was lucky enough to see a random billboard for when it was going through Canada, otherwise I might have missed it. It was an incredible experience. After watching the movies countless times and listening to the various soundtracks hundreds of times it was a revelation to see specific instruments at specific times. It's one thing to hear the music and imagine an orchestra playing (my father played in classical bands for years, they never played anything Star Wars though... So I have some knowledge of the instruments) but seeing it in person was very enlightening. And the fact it was Star Wars, my favorite...

I was a bit miffed last year when there was a similar Star Trek in Concert. I found out like a week before it came to my town. I was trying to enter a contest through HMV but after a couple days got a reply that the contact form was going to HMV UK (even though the contest was advertised on the Canadian site!) and by the time I got a reply the show was sold out. Oh well, at least it wasn't star wars!

Disney does own Episode IV. Fox has distribution rights.

Fox cannot distribute or do anything with IV as they please. They must distribute whatever IV Disney provides the with.

But when it comes to distributing IV (at least in the traditional sense) Disney must come to a deal with Fox. (Unless LFL, or the Star Wars Corporation, and Fox were locked in to a certain percentage split in perpetuity)

The biggest problem at present is that the BD/DVD vs. digital rights for ESB, ROTJ & the PT are split -- Fox owns the BD/DVD rights, Disney the digital rights. As long as those are split, it's highly unlikely that DMA codes for those titles would be included in Fox BD or DVD sets. (There is no such split for ANH/Ep IV; Fox owns both BD/DVD & digital rights, but Disney/LFL tells them what to release so its UV edition is still kept separate.)

The way things are going, it seems doubtful that anything will be cleared up till Disney regains the BD/DVD rights to ESB, ROTJ & PT in 2020. At that point the BD/DVD & digital rights to those titles will be reunified, and DMA codes can be included in new Disney releases of those films. Fox will still have full distribution rights to Ep IV, but I expect it will be more valuable in Disney's hands as part of future boxsets, so IMO Fox will either license or sell those rights back to Disney.

There's no precedent for Fox and Disney tangling with each other that I'm aware of in any of their previous collaborations in distribution. I don't see any reason why either party would do so now or in the future.

Eisner did some not-so-nice things in the 90's regarding the brief Fox animation wing -- he put a re-release of The Little Mermaid out on the same weekend as Fox's Anastasia to blunt the film's grosses, but that's Eisner for you. Other than that, I'm unaware of any instances of Fox being pissed at the Mouse. The studio that Disney historically has bad blood with is Universal, going all the way back to the late 20's.

Even if there was a precedent, it wouldn't be worth much in this case simply because this is Star Wars and therefore a completely different beast.

No, that's Marvel and Fox. Just because Disney inherited that bad blood when they bought Marvel doesn't mean they subscribe to that party line. Disney and Fox have worked together on the international releases of the Die Hard series because Disney owns the distribution rights to DHWAV outside of the US. Sure, Die Hard ain't Star Wars but the precedent is there and no-one wanted to piss on the other's chips in that particular case.

Yes and Disney and Fox, at least in the US do not get along at all.
Their international arms may, but not domestically.
