That was a big part of the colorization debate too. It wasn't just (or even primarily in many cases) that colorized movies looked like ass. People were worried that the black-and-white versions would no longer be broadcast or made available.

The huge irony is that for all the talk of Ted Turner being a barbarian and a vandal he turned out be a huge champion of the old films he was accused of exploiting. Between direct preservation efforts and creating TCM he's pretty much a hero when it comes to preserving our cultural heritage.

C'mon man, you think I am unaware of this. I was making a point, and the point may very will still stand if there is a "no non-special edition" clause.

Quote:
I tend to agree. I think Lucas (and Spielberg and Allen and all the other people arguing for legal protection of the so-called 'moral rights' of artists) might have had their hearts in the right place but they were off-base when they asked Congress to restrict the rights of Ted Turner to do as he pleased with his own property.
I don't think we are in any disagreement at its base.

Look at the first post quoted. I edited the post and some joker used my preliminary post. While he may think he owns what was written, and perhaps may think he can also alter it, the truth is, that my final edit is what should stand.

Of course, some people feel that it already being out there makes them owner of the material.

What it comes down to is this. Throughout history, directors have edited their work, and artist have destroyed their own work (the Marx Brothers destroying their first movie comes to mind).

The problem with Star Wars is that a lot of "johnny come latley"s think that if the theatrical editions aren't in the most pristine way that they somehow have special rights to them.

The hypocrisy is that there are plenty of public knowledge altered version of Star Wars movies that these so called "fans" will actually applaud, and constantly crap all over Lucas official work in the process.

Calling what Lucas did a "CRIME" was stupidity at its worst. Then again, judging from the posters in question, this won't be their last garbage statement they make.

Been nice chatting about this with you. As for the ethics of what Lucas did...immaterial to the original point I made.

xxxxxxxxxxxx

chip75,

Zombie Jesus...and sweet to boot. I like that actually.

Lucas isn't obligated to present the original movies. He already did it for so many years. As for Lucas presenting it..as was pointed out, he doesn't own them anymore. Of course the clause I mentioned may very well be...so I guess you will have to wait a while on that...if ever.

p.s. Calling it a crime against cinema is exactly stating that he shouldn't be allowed or has no right to it...or worse is comparing against real crimes against cinema which as you probably well know, don't really need repeated here.

I love the carbon freeze scene, you've got most of the characters in that scene and the music and emotions are strong in that scene. Also love the Vader cloud city reveal at the dinner table.

Something about the dinner table scene bugs me, but I can't put my finger on it. Always has...

I'm sorry, but as much as I love Han Solo, I always felt like he got way too much credit for his role in the Battle of Yavin.

You can't stay out of harm's way for 95% of the fight and then swoop in at the last second, kill a couple of TIE fighters and earn a spot in the medal ceremony.

Maybe a participation ribbon or a certificate of appreciation or something like that.

...but he should not have been on that medal stand with Luke.

Didn't he get the medal for rescuing Leia?

Perhaps he got something else between STAR WARS and EMPIRE ... Something that might make your skin crawl - after seeing JEDI.

Solo got paid and was honoured with a medal whilst Chewbacca gets the last line.

My wife thinks the most emotional moment is when Obi Wan has to turn his back on Anakin in Episode III. I too think that is an incredible moment.

For me, what is and will always be the most emotional moment is when I hear "you're all clear kid, now lets blow this thing...."*

That is such a wonderful moment, I still get teary eyed.

A very distant second is "we meet again Obi Wan, when I met you before I was but a learner, now I am the master"*

*note, lines may not be perfect because I am going from memory here.

I was thinking of this scene too. I love Ben's brief explanation of the Force. That whole scene is brilliant and there's very little to it.

This shows Alec's acting and Hamil's lacking. However when you are in the realm of greatness it isn't so bad.

There are so many scenes in that great film.

Look at the nuance as I have mentioned before with Alec hesitating how to break what happened to Luke's father.

Whether buried or not, the big reveal was put in place by that scene. I believe it was a subliminal subconscious story telling that at least hinted at something so much bigger.

Empire in all its popularity never captured that kind of vast rich background.

You don''t need any good acting when you can have some goofy CGI droids in the background for some slapstick. And some dinosaurs!

That's the wisdom of your master. Obey!

Not following. Where is the CGI in that scene (or dinosaurs for that matter)? Also to clarify, I didn't mention A New Hope. Star Wars, as anyone knows about my posts, is and will always be without the best version without any inferior sequels attached....in my opinion.

Alec was certainly great, but the strength of the scene is in the writing. It's paced well (a slow scene after an intense one.). The expository dialogue in that scene establishes everything you need to know about the universe while creating enough mystery to keep it interesting. The scene follows with the message from Leia which lays out perfectly the stakes of the situation.

I agree that sequels never can match the original as the best parts of films are learning about the characters, and if the first film does its job, there will be less to learn in subsequent installments. Empire succeeds in many other ways however, developing secondary characters, (two words from Darth Vader and we know everything we need to know about Bobba Fett, that is perfect economic writing,) character arc (Luke makes the dangerous decision to leave training early to help his friends) etc.,

I think Empire Strikes Back is very successful. I just don't put it in the hyperbole world as others have. I think it is the second best because of it being a stronger total movie...but as far as scenes themselves go... I prefer the prequels in their entirety (mainly because of the ark of Anakin), but again that is just my opinion. That said...Yoda is pretty hard to beat.

Getting back to Star Wars. Writing, ABSOLUTELY. George is such a gifted writer it just blows my mind that someone would come up with this world. While the dialogue isn't Shakespeare, it does make it look quite easy for Alec to do his lying back Sherlock Holmes reminiscing while turning his beard of a much better time before the dark side.

Mine is where the Emperor is torturing Luke at the end of Jedi. Vader is standing there with his hand cut off looking back and forth between his son and his master and you can see the anguish on his black mask just by the way he is moving his head. Then he picks the Emperor up and throws him down the shaft. John Williams music makes the entire scene work beautifully. Not only is it my favorite Star Wars moment but my favorite moment in film.

Now for me to go all negative. Of course the scene being perfect meant that Lucas would have to destroy it with his special editions by adding that stupid "No, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" into it.

Agreed; fantastic moment. I think David Prowse is underrated for his performance in the suit. His postures and little moves of the head are extremely effective and evocative. I also love his performance in the landing-pad gantry, when Luke surrenders to him. He leans forward and seems evil, malevolent, and overly defensive after Luke calls him "Anakin Skywalker" -- just by his imposing posture. And then the transformation by the end of the scene: the way he stares off into the night after Luke is led away... it's a genuinely moving moment. You can feel the "conflict within him". Kudos to Prowse for the Vader we "love"; no one else has gotten it quite right behind the mask, in my opinion.
