"crime against cinema" is not an original term. The use of the term was a gross misappropriation. As someone who has recently been watching Krzysztof Kieslowski bluray of Blind Chance, I found the statement extremely offensive considering what the polish government put him through. You pointing me to a dictionary undermines what is a normal drop jaw moment. This poster's statement is obscene at the least and has no place here. Me? I thought that was a dumb argument then and not much has changed in the last thirty or so years. Ted Turner owned The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca and they were his to do with as he pleased. Disney owns the Star Wars movies and they're theirs to do with as they please. Do I think they have an ethical obligation to be responsible stewards of the properties they own? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, their stuff is their stuff. |

There have been a lot of amazing scenes (from a dramatic sense, from a quotable-moment sense, from an epic effects extravaganza sense) but that opening was literally jaw-dropping and set the stage for all the awesomeness to come. Edit: in fact, this might very well be my all-time greatest single scene from any movie period. Obviously I'd have to give that a lot more thought but if it's not #1 it's awfully close. I must admit, for me, it is a toss up between three scenes.
I'm a sucker for happy endings. So the tail end of the celebration when Luke, Lando, Leia, Han, 3PO, R2, and Wedge all meet up together, fading into the approval of Yoda, Obi-Wan and Anakin. Padme's Ruminations. Vader vs Luke on Bespin. Everything leading up to, but NOT including the reveal. |

Seconded. Remains as thrilling and (as Luke blows the thing and they go home) cathartic no matter how many times I see the film, and I've seen it too many times to count.
It's amazing to me that, all these decades and Star Wars films later, there hasn't been a better space battle in the series. |

But while they're under no legal obligation to, for instance, spends tons of money on preserving the films they own there is, I think, an ethical obligation to do so. Lucas was wrong when he said American works of art belong to the American public. But he was right when he said they're part of our cultural history and when he argued that there's a legitimate public interest when it comes to protecting and preserving them. What if my house is a designated historical landmark? Say a Frank Lloyd Wright house or the like? Is it still mine to do with completely as I please? Part of me says yes, part of me says 'well, not so fast'. |

Designated landmark is by permission of the owner.
Not the same. What if's are not important. I am speaking about what has happened. There are people that want to take the righis if Lucas away because they feel they own it in some way. WRONG. What Lucas has done is not a crime, and I question the people wanting to take those rights away of owning any thing of significance in their life (like a house or creation that has made money). Lucas made his work available time and time again. This "crime" talk is unjustified. |

Absolutely. And something that still impresses me about that whole sequence: Han swooping in and saving the day is about as hokey and cheesy and predictable as it gets but when I saw it for the first time I was so wrapped up in the battle I absolutely didn't see it coming.

Sweet Zombie Jesus, nobody is saying that George Lucas couldn't do what he wanted with the movies he's directed, just present the bloody things alongside the original creations.
It is in no way an unreasonable request. People just want see the movies the way they first saw them. They just want a choice. It's not that hard. |

I tend to agree. I think Lucas (and Spielberg and Allen and all the other people arguing for legal protection of the so-called 'moral rights' of artists) might have had their hearts in the right place but they were off-base when they asked Congress to restrict the rights of Ted Turner to do as he pleased with his own property. |

Probably the scene in Obi-Wan's home, from Kenobi's exposition to Leia's message the entire universe is painted before your eyes all in a little hermit hut.
