There's no guarantee that we'll get new releases, fingers crossed we do, but we're about to go past the 40 anniversary for the original movie and Lucasfilm haven't really promoted much apart from a few odds and ends.

If you want to see the movies and they're reasonably priced (it might be worth grabbing the Original Trilogy set), then they're worth picking up, even with their faults.

I am done buying the OT. I might have gone 4K if if wasn't for the Despecialized versions and that was the only way to get the UOT but since it isn't I won't bite.

I'm enough of a mark for these movies that I'd buy a 4K set even if they were (and probably will be) George's latest versions. The hatred I have for the most recent revisions would be tempered to a degree if I had some lovingly remastered visual gorgeousness to go with them, but as it is I found them intolerable when allied with the creaky old Lowry transfers.

Go for it. I also own this steelbook set and all i can say is, they are marvelous. Full gloss and embossed title. Plus, they are fairly cheap to get. On BF each steelbook was on sale for 6 eur.

My copy of A NEW HOPE from the 2011 set was giving me some problems last night. It would just hang on a black screen (no "for best results...") card that usually pops up after a few moments. Just spinning with a black screen. It made me realize that I really don't want to buy the movies again on BD if I don't have to. I need a substantial upgrade/incentive to replace my discs, even though I love the movies a lot. Kinda sad.

People's obsession with the non-special editions is strange. Especially when many other movies have come out with non theatrical versions only and nobody ever complains.

I can't wait for Star Wars to come out in 4K..... Hopefully 2018....

Yeah, just laziness and milking it to death. Take an old release and put another slip over it with a 22-minute bonus DVD and see if people will buy it all over again.

Disney should have ads in theaters announcing the release of the unaltered OT right before The Last Jedi starts.

I'm the type of guy who will not purchase any collections or box sets or anything of the sort until I'm almost certain a film series or whatever it may be is totally finished. I prefer to wait as long as necessary to finally purchase whatever grand, spectacular complete collection they ultimately put out.

In this case however, based on how popular the Star Wars universe is I might be waiting until I'm dead. I'm guessing they'll never stop pumping these out.

That would be because those other movies were properly done and also they were made as an alternative addition to the original version.

They didn't tell you: This is it, from now on you'll only get this new edition because I feel like it and the actual original movie you like so much will never be seen again, whether you like it or not!

I find your post even stranger since the obsessed are not the people who want to see the real thing instead of some failed mock up made in the 90's.

You're right on that count. It's pretty much like trying to buy a "complete" James Bond set, in that you know that the next film will come out soon enough and then it'll be outdated.

My advice is to just buy the region-free UK 9-disc boxset w/ Episodes I - VI for $60 shipped and just be done with it in regard to those films (at least until a proper release of the unaltered Original Trilogy comes out).

Although the core "Skywalker saga" (Episodes I-IX) will likely be a mostly-finished thing once J.J. Abrams' film hits theaters in 2019 -- everything else is side-tales, and Rian Johnson's new trilogy is purportedly something completely different from the three Skywalker-centric trilogies. You can probably buy the inevitable "Saga Boxed Set" in 2020 or whenever with a relatively-solid feeling of completeness, assuming what Johnson says is correct.

Add in that the movie has been constantly changing ever since it hit the screens back in '77. There is a huge list of alterations, pre-Special Edition. I distinctly remember the 'Close the blast doors!' line change from when I was a kid.

So, which one is the "Proper theatrical edition"?

Kennedy has already stated that she isn't touching the first 6 movies because those are George's. Time to get over it and move on. It's only been 2 decades.

For better or worse.... I always prefer the director's vision. And the Star Wars movies currently being sold on Blu-ray match the director's vision.

A box set would be nice, but I really hope they release each of the 9 movies individually. I like everything in chronological order on the shelf, and it would be nice to put Rogue One, Clone Wars, and Rebels in the correct chronology.

Nobody cares about alternate versions of films being made. It's the inability to legitimately purchase the original cuts.
If the Final Cut of Blade Runner was the only cut available, you'd see a similar reaction. If the Rogue Cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past replaced the theatrical cut permanently, you'd see a backlash. This is the only time I can think of a high-profile movie (or trilogy, in this case) not having its original cut relatively easily-available.

Dumb and Dumber comes to mind. The unrated cut is the only one on Bluray
