I'm reading that the Disney / Fox deal is done and will be officially announced Thursday.

What better way to punctuate that announcement and the release of Ep VIII than to announce 4K releases of Rogue One and Eps 1-7---including as a bonus, 4K restorations of the unaltered original trilogy?!?

When I rewatched TFA the other day, couldn't help thinking throughout that it would look so much better on UHD. Hope we get one soon.

So much for being a reference disc

It could still be reference quality for BD. It was finished in 4k, so that should will look stunning if when it’s released in UHD.

Yeah, getting the right and proper logo in front of new Star Wars movies is cool. Seeing the X-Men fight the Avengers is cool.

But I'm not thrilled with a big media conglomerate gobbling up another big media conglomerate. Less choice, (or in this case, fewer studios) is always a terrible thing.

I think it's just prolonged exposure to UHD makes it easy to see flaws in otherwise perfectly fine BDs. And I wasn't watching it on my usual setup. Just couldn't help noticing how over-saturated it is, and the highlights are so blown out. HDR will do wonders for TFA. And I hope we get the Falcon chase in its full IMAX AR.

They're LucasFilm movies, not Fox movies.

You will not see that logo in front of any of the new films no matter what.

Have Lucasfilm ever offered an official explanation as to why the whole "Shuttle Tyderium" sequence in ROTJ looks so terrible on these blu-rays? Everything from the shuttle approaching the Death Star until Luke and Leia jump on the speeder bike looks less-than-standard-def... except, oddly, the shot of the back of Vader's helmet as he pensively peers out at the jagged edge of the Death Star, which looks fantastic.

If it were any other company, this low-rez sequence would be grounds for a disc replacement program... but Lucasfilm is always so cheap, and they rarely even admit when there's a mistake (like the famously swapped audio channels in the original dvd for A NEW HOPE).

Just so weird and distracting; can't wait for the eventual upgraded transfer of this, too.

Been watching the movies again (also in preparation for The Last Jedi) and I hate that they didn’t bother to fix ALL of the lightsaber shots that they ****ed up with the DVDs. What baffles me is that they fixed SOME of the shots, but not all of them.

I think the extreme sense of uncertainty over what will undoubtably become a monopoly will overshadow all that.

Same here. As a rule I'm not overly sensitive to transfer issues but for some reason this disc in particular looks more and more processed every time I pop it in.

Is it always a terrible thing though?

The 1940s are widely (and I would say rightly) viewed as one of Hollywood's great Golden Ages and that wasn't exactly an era of openness and choice. Big studios gobbled up small studios, restrictive contracts with talent were the norm and studios even tried to monopolize theaters themselves.

And despite all that they produced some of the best movies ever made.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's no cause for concern but I wouldn't be sounding any death knells for creativity and variety just yet.

You know what’s funny, in all these years that I’ve had these Blu-rays, I don’t think I ever really processed this, but I’m watching RotJ right now and that whole sequence really does look terrible. I wonder what the reason for that is.

It's a bit of everything. Better displays and better restoration standards in general (never mind those of us who've switched to 4K) only serve to make this look jankier and jankier in comparison, I saw the light and ditched my Blu-rays a full two years ago. No-one ever seems to mention Empire but the frozen grain persists in that flick too and there's some very distracting colour breathing in the Rebel base on Hoth, the colour flickers on their faces in a way I've never seen on any previous transfer. There there's this in Jedi:

Doesn't even matter if they had acknowledged it, we'd only have gotten some more "deliberate creative decision" bullshit spewing from LFL's appointed mouthpiece. Those 4K transfers can't come soon enough although anyone thinking that DisneyFox are gonna go all-out straight off the bat are deluding themselves, we've got two of the most catalogue-retentive studios joining forces (well, one's being consumed by the other but you get the idea) and that's not a good thing.

I purchased my last STAR WARS box set in 2011, and it’ll stay that way, until the original versions (1977-83) are released - if ever?

Man I was gonna buy all the steel books at Frys but now it looks like they will be doin a 4K transfer of all the films so I will wait. Kinda wanted to finally try to get into these but I would hate to buy the steels only to have to buy the 4k's say 6 months later.
