2 and 3 shot in 1080p, finished in industry-spec 2K. TPM won't get a new transfer from the original 35mm negative as that stuff doesn't have any CG on it, the only finished record of the film is the 2K digital files and the subsequent 35mm filmouts. Any 4K UHD version will be an upscale just like the other two.

I think it was also mentioned that the CGI computers were so old, they actually couldn't do a new scan of the negative and reinsert the CGI because the software wasn't compatible or something to that effect. If so... whoops, haha.

Even so, a new transfer without all that pesky DNR would be nice. I'm assuming at this point that the master for the blu-ray was kind of a T2 scenario, where it was probably degrained for the 3D release and they just used that.

But damn, a new good 4k set (even upscaled resolution), especially if they offered the theatrical cut of Phantom Menace and fixed the weird editing issues on Clones, and they've somehow got me buying three movies I don't really like for the third time

Weird editing issues?

What's the difference between the TPM cuts?

Attack of the Clones has a brief sequence in the Coruscant chase and Dooku escaping where the order of both events have been randomly changed. TPM the race has been slightly extended.

The deleted ‘Air Taxi’ scene has been edited back into The Phantom Menace.

The editing in the Blu-ray version of that first scene makes more sense. It seems like they switched the shots for continuity reasons.

Anyway, I have some screenshots from a 35mm print, if anybody is interested:

What is the source of these screencaps? Is there actually a full scan of this print somewhere?

Those 35mm screenshots of Attack of the Clones look way better than the digital master on the Blu-Ray. The video noise helps.

Since we're talking about film, anybody remember the 35mm slides the action figures came with in the late 90's?

Yes, I think someone scanned an entire print.

Wow! I'm surprised it haven't heard anything about this on other forums. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would love to see this print. I know I definitely would! Even if to finally just be able to see all of the differences between this and the DVD/Blu-Ray. I know the film prints were reported to have a number of differences from the digital release, which is what the home video versions are mostly based on.

Honestly, 35mm helps with making older CGI work feel less dated. Something about film grain just adds an appealing texture.

I’d like to buy box set packaging for the Despecialized Editions with blank Blu-rays that have cover art on them. Then I’d burn the discs with files I have. Has anyone here done this?

I saw that too and I actually prefer that cut overall. It's 20 minutes shorter and most of the groan inducing stuff is cut. The Naboo Anakin/Padme scenes work because they cut it down to it's essence. So no "I'm haunted by the kiss you never should have given me" line, no picnic and no Shaak-riding.

I really hope we see a 4K release of AOTC sourced from the film strips someday.

There’s an IMAX cut of Clones that’s 20 minutes shorter than the regular version?

The limitations of pre-digital IMAX projectors of the time required that the film be edited down to a shorter length.

If those 20 minutes are every scene with Portman and Christensen together I might go for it.
