There won't be a hype-builder; if the Fox deal goes through, the ink won't be dry until after Episode IX is released.

All of our favorite movies should be updated with CGI and new scenes. Let’s have special editions of Alien, Aliens, Terminator 2, Predator, Jaws, Jurassic Park, etc. with updated special effects and supress the originals!

I don’t think it’s that simple. Each year that goes by, the fan base that grew up with the originals shrinks and more new fans watch the SEs, not really caring (or knowing) that what they’re seeing has been altered along the way. If the sales potential for the UOT is already low enough that people have to question the value of releasing them, that value will only continue to drop. Brings me no pleasure to say this but if I sound pessimistic, it’s cuz I am.

My best friend grew up with the 1997 SEs and she never knew about the unaltered originals until I showed them to her. Even then she told me she can live with the alterations and it doesn't make the movies any worse That made me really angry lol

So what do you figure, the 30 year olds like me who caught the Sci-Fi channel marathons are the last generation of UOT fans? Even I'm a little young I guess since the SEs hit theaters in 97 and a lot of us went to see them and got the tape sets as christmas gifts.

(I hated the Jedi changes though, and that was even before the NOOO...)

I am 28, she's 29. I saw the 1997 SEs first, too. But the originals are far superior in every way and should be available officially for historical purposes alone.

I kinda like the victory celebration song at the end of Jedi, though.

Star Wars aka A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back deserve to be seen in their original Oscar-winning forms. Those films were comprised of the work of more than just George Lucas.

'Star Wars' has not won an Oscar since 1981

Mark Hamill, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac and BB-8 took the stage at the 2018 Oscars to present the awards for animated short and animated feature.

But their film, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” ended the night winless, extending the franchise’s Oscars drought.

It’s been 40 years since George Lucas and his galactic fairy tale made their debut at the Academy Awards, and “Star Wars” has made itself at home in the years since.

But while the franchise has racked up a respectable 33 nominations, spread over nine films (including 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”), the series hasn’t brought an Oscar home since 1981.

The galaxy far, far away had by far its most successful showing at the 1978 ceremony, where “Star Wars: A New Hope” won six categories, including film editing, score and visual effects.

(Fun fact: George Lucas has never won an Oscar for the “Star Wars” franchise. His ex-wife, Marcia Lucas, has won an Oscar for the films, thanks for her part in editing the original film.)

“A New Hope” garnered the most nominations among “Star Wars” films at the Oscars, with 10 nominations. At the 1981 awards, heat for the series was already fading, with “The Empire Strikes Back” earning three nominations but only one win.

“Empire’s” win for best sound is the last Oscar the franchise has earned, special achievement awards notwithstanding.

But Oscar nominations continue to roll in for the “Star Wars” universe. Here’s a look at how nominations break down by picture.

“Star Wars: A New Hope” — 6 wins, 10 nominations

“Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” – 1 win, 3 nominations

“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” – 4 nominations

“Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” — 3 nominations

“Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” — 1 nomination

“Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” — 1 nomination

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” — 5 nominations

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” — 2 nominations

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” — 4 nominations

Has anyone asked about the originals from Kathleen Kennedy? Someone should ask about them at some Q&A. Also I don't think releasing them is against Lucas's wishes. He did release them in 2006. They just need to be released in better quality.

I would find it very strange if there are people who don’t know the originals were altered as they’re watching the SEs. Do they they think the movies were shot in the late 90s or early 2000s?

Unless you watch them in that hatchet order or whatever it's called, the very numbering of the movies would clue someone in on their executive meddling. Not to mention the little green dude's constantly evolving appearance.

A SE of JAWS almost happened in 1997, before sanity prevailed.

Bruce would have received a new CGI skin (replacing the wrinkled, neoprene original) and new teeth.

Well I'm 36, so I had watched the originals for a few years before the Special Editions came out when I was in high school. The Special Editions were the versions my younger brother first experienced, though. But I never purchased those and aside from seeing the Special Editions theatrically, we watched the originals. Nowadays he won't even watch the DVD or Blu-Ray versions, and I'm kinda getting to that point now too.

Point is, I think there's enough Star Wars fans that there will always be fans that like the UOT, maybe not because they were around back when the films came out, but because their parents/older siblings or whoever had those versions for them to watch. If know that if I have kids, they'll be watching UOT Star Wars with me before I'd show them the altered versions or the later films.

To be brutally honest, I'm fine with "SE" upgrades of older movies as long as they don't supplant the originals. See Blade Runner and Star Trek TOS.

Has there ever been another case in cinema history of a movie having drastic changes and the original version being suppressed? Not having the originals available is a horrible idea. There isn’t a single reasonable argument to be made in favor of doing this, therefore it’s a fact that it’s a horrible idea, not an opinion. I know things like this are supposed to be subjective, but if no one can give a reason that makes any sense otherwise, then it should be considered a fact that it’s a horrible idea, just like how flinging a pile of sh*t on a canvas isn’t really art despite what some people say.

See, this is why I think it's bullshit when people defend the alterations because George Lucas is somehow entitled to it. They're not his movies. The moment they entered production, they became a group project. Erasing the oscar-winning work of all the people who contributed to the films is just a dick move.

He never had a "true vision". He's just somebody who can't make up his goddamn mind.

And nobody would care if he wasn't so hellbent on suppressing the original versions.
