They've pretty much admitted that Lucas is the reason we haven't seen the unaltered OT yet.

Another re-package of the Blu-Ray Editions from 2011 probably won't sell well.

I think that the only way there can be another successful home video release of the Original Trilogy is if the Theatrical Cuts are fully restored and included. I'd love it if the 6-Track Stereo Mixes are included and presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio just like what Warner Bros is doing with the upcoming re-releases of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Superman.

Superman is getting a Dolby Atmos mix, the original mix will be DD 5.1

I meant the standard Blu-Ray versions that are going to be included with the 4K Editions will will feature DTS-HD Master Audio. I know that 2001: A Space Odyssey is getting a standard Blu-Ray release as well but I am not sure about Superman.

I read the information for the upcoming Superman 4K Edition wrong. It said that the new audio will be mixed from the original 1978 6-track 70mm.

Not really. The 4K releases, like in the previous formats, will sell like hotcakes.

It's a fact that the absence of the theatrical cuts doesn't prevent a release of the movies (specially in a widely adopted home video format) from being a success.

It would be a bigger success if it had them though.

Before Solo, I thought that the Star Wars name could sell literally anything.

Disney

Star Wars OT sells.

It sold more VHS tapes than most franchises, sold more DVDs than most, sold more Blu-rays, and will likely do the same on UHD. With or without the UOT, SW will do as well on UHD as anything. It's an evergreen franchise, with literally generations of fans. More people will buy into 4K / UHD because Star Wars is available.

If anything, Di$ney can sell the OT twice on UHD: Once, as pretty much a port of the BD set; then again, down the line, with the UOT included.

I'm talking about the original six-movie saga. But yes, I don't see the Disney movies holding up in terms of sales on the long run.

I still don't think they'll restore the original theatrical cuts until Lucas dies.

I wonder if that was actually a stipulation in their contract. Can’t release the unaltered OT until Lucas dies. If so, what’s the point? Is he so embarrassed by them that he doesn’t want to see them advertised anywhere?

He's made it pretty clear he doesn't want them out there, as he considers them "unfinished films." I'm not necessarily saying it's in the contract though, I think they might just not do it out of respect or whatever. Didn't Kennedy already say something to that effect? That they were "his films" and they won't mess with how he wants them? Which is hilarious since he only directed one of them, but whatever.

@ 3:00

This is the closest we got to Kathleen Kennedy speaking about it. Unfortunatley the interviewer wasn’t clear enough about what he was asking. Hopefully someone else asks her at next years Celebration, and is more direct about it.

I don’t think we’ll ever have the unaltered versions. At this point I’ll just be happy to get any version on 4K.

The interviewer didn’t really word his question properly. He said something like ‘You guys aren’t gonna change them again are you??’. I think he wanted to work his way into seeing if they had plans for the OUT but the question he asked came out weird. It was to the question he asked that Kennedy said ‘I won’t change those. They’ll always be George’s films’ or whatever. Not exactly ruling out a future release of the OUT but definitely doesnt increase it either.

Edit: I see spanky87 posted the vid. Good work!

I wonder what color they will make Luke's lightsaber on the Falcon in A New Hope for the 4K version of the Special Edition? It has been about every color in the rainbow so far except blue.
