It’s funny how history repeats itself. Look at people overreacting to Disney Star Wars. It’s disgusting.

While I do think that E1 is the weakest of the Lucas 6, I don't think it's all that bad of a movie, and certainly not the "Worst movie ever made" that angry fans have made it out to be. Does it have 16 years of directorial rust coming off the hull? Absolutely. Could I stand a little less goofy Jar-Jar? Sure. Beyond that, I have no real issues with the movie.

I understand what function Jar Jar was suppose to be - that the movies were about to get real dark real fast and that he was meant to lighten the mood. Slapstick has always been a part of Star Wars - R2 pratfalls all over the place in the original three - so I'm okay with it here too.

My only change to the character would be to dial the slapstick back slightly during the battle for Naboo. Start him goofy, have him learn to be less goofy, and then have him rise to the challenge before him. That might have taken the sting out of the angry fan's ire some.

Ah well, it's 20 years on now. It is what it is.

I was 19 and thought Jar Jar was a cinematic travesty. Sorry, not gonna pretend otherwise. That said the actor shouldn't be blamed for that, and he should never have been personally attacked. The making-of doc shows he was doing exactly what Lucas wanted, and that actor in a different role and movie would have been celebrated.

I’ll never understand why people attack actors for characters they hate or think are stupid when clearly the reasons for their dislike have to do with the writing. It’s not like someone else playing the role would magically make that character loved by everyone.

This. I don’t like Jar-Jar, but Lucas deserves the brunt of the blame.

I was 6 when TPM came out so naturally I didn’t hate Jar Jar that much and for the most part still don’t. That said I do understand the aspects to the character people find so irritating but like others have said that’s still no excuse to have made it so hard for the actor. He was doing a job and he did it the best he could. It was Lucas’ story and film and hence his decision on what to do with the character. I don’t wanna make this a ‘blame Lucas’ type post but in the end the truth is in the writing.

Phantom Menace is my favorite of the Prequels but Jar Jar will always be annoying. I agree that fans shouldn't take it out on the actor. Same goes for Kelly Marie Tran for portraying Rose. Some of the stuff written about her is down right disgusting.

I don't mind Jar Jar. He doesn't annoy me as much as 3PO, nor anywhere near as much as the ST characters. I also really like TPM. The only stale one of the Sextet is AOTC, imo.

Yeah, that can be pretty gross these days. It used to be funny when it was just soap opera stars being scolded on the street for cheating on their make-believe wives but now it's a different ball of disgusting.

And like you say, it's stupid too. Jake Lloyd didn't write 'yippee' and Ahmed Best didn't make Jar Jar a buffoon. They were just playing the hands they were dealt.

The only thing I really disliked about Jar Jar was that he symbolized the end of puppetry and practical creatures and ushered in the era of "serkis folk" as they are called. (Which does a disservice to everyone who performed these characters before Serkis I might add.)

Phantom Menace regardless of its warts is still a fun and wondrous piece of escapism. You ever think that sometimes we take our fandom too far, and forget to relax our cracks and just enjoy the ride? Same with Last Jedi... it's been called some of the worst things... like really? There was absolutely nothing of merit or entertainment value at all??

I actually quite like TLJ, and think there are things of merit in TMP. If I could just get the original trilogy remastered properly, I’d probably a lot less bitter towards Lucas and the rest of the franchise.

Eh, sometimes? But on the other hand as goofy as the OT got, you still had Ford, Fisher and Hamill doing their earnest best, not to mention classical actors like Cushing and Guiness up there raising the bar. I can enjoy the prequels, but they suffer from a rusty director (who wasn't that great in the first place) and screenplays that each could have used another half-dozen re-writes each. Nostalgia can only cover so much, I like some older silly stuff, The Black Hole is one of my absolute favorites, but you had incredible set design plus some pretty decent actors giving it a go to keep that one afloat.

There are some great sequences in TLJ, and I maintain it's a pretty good Star Wars movie - the problem is it's a terrible Episode VIII. It's like an ep 8 from another timeline that fell into ours, and we have to wonder if that other timeline got the Ep 8 we should have gotten, with a disillusioned Luke who comes to the conclusion much sooner that he needs to get his butt back into the game and goes up against Kylo Ren in the flesh and Poe and Admiral Holdo have a confrontation much sooner and figure out something to do with the fleet.

And right there with you on the original OT. I would give up almost all my other Blurays and DVDs for a high quality Bluray set of the Holy Trilogy.

It would seem like 2020 would be the sweet spot.

Yup, that's what I'm thinking. The Fox buyout will be done and all the ducks will be in a row by then, plus the sequel trilogy will be complete. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire classic and prequel films were released at the same time as the home video release of Episode IX, possible as individual releases and a giant Episode I-IX box set.

The real question is obviously going to be what we're getting-- The only film of the Lucas-6 that doesn't have multiple versions is Revenge of the Sith. The simplest way they may go is just to produce 4K versions of what was on the Complete Saga Blu-Rays. That would be a shame, but I can totally see that happening.

ROTS actually has 3 versions: theatrical, 2005 DVD edition, and 2011 Special Edition. The 2011 SE made three minor changes

- Added clone voices at the Utapua battle
- Added rust to the Kashyyyk rooftops
- Re-Added screen wipe on Mustafar

The dvd version is exactly like the theatrical with one change, it removed the screen wipe on Mustafar (which the 2011 SE re-adds)

This video goes over them.

To me, Jar Jar isn't that bad, the biggest problem is that he really slows the movie down and messes with its pacing.

Overall, I liked him as a kid and found him funny, and I can appreciate the Buster Keaton callbacks now as an adult. I kinda still like him now, as he's a character who always genuinely tries to do the right thing, despite messing it up. Its just that a few of his scenes (particularly the underwater ones) drag on.

Had he had maybe 30% less screen-time, I think the reaction to him would have been waayyy less harsh.
