Of course what happened to Ahmed Best is terrible, but this sudden resurfacing of his story is most certainly not a coincidence and is just another lame attempt at trying to paint the fans as the cause, when if you look at new coverage from around TPM's original theatrical run, the biggest critics of Jar Jar (and subsequently the actor himself) were the media themselves - who can now get away with it because most people have the attention span of a ****ing flea.

That's a very good point. I've said this before, but I still maintain that the criticism of Jar Jar would have been less vociferous if he'd just remained on Naboo for the whole of the movie. You could literally solve this in a single line: before the party escape Naboo, have Qui Gon turn to Jar Jar and say words to the effect of 'Jar Jar, return to your people and wait for us. Once the Queen is safe, we will return and help you fight the Trade Federation'. This not only stops the Jedi from looking like cowards (I've always had a problem with how Qui Gon and Obi-Wan essentially run away from the iinvasion when the Jedi are bound to help suffering and injustice) but it cuts Jar Jar' s screen time in half. If you think about it, there is no story reason for Jar Jar to be on Tattooine or Coruscant at all. Queen Amidala makes the decision to return to Naboo herself after the Senate decline to help so Jar Jar isn't needed at all in the middle of the movie.

Now of course I'm not saying that fans weren't also vocal about their distates for Jar Jar (and subsequently the actor), but what these modern coverages conveniently fail to mention is that social media was only barely a thing back in 1999. At most you had an official message board, but even then they were very insular and unless Ahmed Best actually went out of his way to look them up (or some sufficiently irate fan actually found his address and sent him letters or e-mail), he wouldn't have seen the backlash from the fans, at least not directly. Yes, you had entire websites dedicated to hating Jar Jar. But again, they were dedicated to hating Jar Jar.

It also seems that the media has quietly dropped trying to pull off this same stunt with Jake Lloyd, probably because there's even less room to spin the story around to support then anti-fan narrative. The two biggest reasons being 1) he was only a kid back then and was even less likely to have foraged random message boards, and 2) he specifically named his own classmates as the biggest source of mockery and his personal grief.

Who did Ahmed Best claim was the source of his depression, the media or the fans? Or both?

No one at the time bullied Ahmed Best. He's only saying this so he is in the spotlight again. He wants a second 15 minutes of fame. I was on all the forums back then. Yeah, people disliked the character, but it wasn't really hate filled, it was mostly mocking. And he's lying about Jar Jar being a big bad Sith. That was never going to happen.

Now, regarding the Tran actress, the people who bullied her off of social media WERE NOT Star Wars fans. It was actually people in China. And it was because Chinese do not like people of a certain colour. She was bullied for "race mixing." The media and LucasFilm spun it to make it seem like it was the fault of the people who disliked Last Jedi. They will do anything to defend that sh*t of a movie.

I have not heard anything about this. The only thing I know is that she never actually said anything about why she closed her instagram account. Despite all the editorials trying to frame her story as such when she finally spoke up, she never mentioned fans once. In fact, she didn't really seem to say much anything about her disappearing from social media and staying quiet despite all the outrage, which I'm sure she must've been at least aware of.

I also forget whether it was Tran or Ridley that had gone on the record to state they disliked social media to begin with, but I do remember Ridley apparently leaving social media because she got harrassed...over some gun control related post she did, which would have nothing to do with the fans or even the movies.

I'm sorry, but that's at best a naively insensitive and misguided comment and at worst an utterly idiotic one.

First time I've clicked into this thread in a while, and I see the same thing I saw last time. Gold Ranger gaslighting actors by saying they never experienced what they say they experienced, as if he's been accused directly and he's taking it personally. Also claims the actors are lying for attention and fame. Super healthy. I'm back out.

I believe he was questioning his motives, not his claims.

Also nobody likes a hit & run poster so if you're gonna leave, stay that way.

It will never cease to amaze me how some posts online need, need, NEED to simplify things for themselves to the point of assuming they know what motivates a media personality (a la 'Oh, Ahmed Best just wants to keep himself relevant so he never really suffered.'). It's the same thinking that all of the news media is one agenda-based organization with dastardly plans to spin the news against you and your beliefs. "Fans' aren't all one guy, either. Just because somebody gets loud on the internet doesn't mean the world is all actually of the same mind. In fact, those are the people I'd avoid at all costs.

But I digress: I'm fine with Phantom Menace but the best possible single fix would have been to subtitle Jar-Jar or give him a language like Chewbacca and make the first droid Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan meet C-3PO who comes with them and has to translate for the Gungans and the Naboo.

Now you're doing it yourself; putting things into other people's mouths, in form of a strawman no less.

I've seen what Gold Ranger was presumably implying before; in the same tweet where Ahmed Best talked about his suicidal depression, he was also plugging his book or something, suggesting he might've been more after a quick buck than sympathy, not to mention that tweet was made around the same time everyone's talking about Tran's social media disappearance.

That doesn't mean it was all made up however.

I did Google it, I found the 4K77 page and it offered no explanation.

I'm still not sure I understand it even now. There are three 1977 mixes, two of which are labeled "2018 version"? What are the two stereo remixes?

If I want the original theatrical experience, which is the point of the whole thing, which of the first three tracks do I use?

Always surprised at how few people notice that Jar Jar is (unintentionally, and hilariously I might add) a quintessential minstrel caricature. He fits perfectly in the cinematic company of Sleep n' Eat and Stepin Fetchit. His shuffling, languid movements, his ridiculous dialect (which is shockingly close to slave dialect), his constant buffoonery, his penchant for stealing food when no one is looking, even his big "lips" and large rolling eyes--every bit of it is classic minstrelsy. Listen to how he says "meesa" "weesa" and "yousa"; and compare that to old slave dialect "massa" "yassah" "weesa gwine to go ovah heah". It's as if George Lucas's subconscious belched up every black stereotype known to american culture and concentrated it into one cartoonish figure--and then nobody bothered to tell him about it. Again, I don't think it was done purposefully, but it's remarkable that no one looked at all these characteristics and said "Hey George, you do realize that you've turned Willie Best into an alien?"

Actually a lot of people seem to love that. Anytime anybody is even remotely critical of any behavior people trample each other trying to make that criticism all about them. Whether it is or not.
