What is your evidence? There's no mental gymnastics involved in denying something that hasn't even been put forward yet! You have to show me something before I can argue against it.

That seems reasonable. Not to say I agree, but I think that's the best reason there is to believe what you believe. Feel free to ignore the rest of this, because obviously at this point we're both just speculating, but for me, I don't quite buy that...

If Kathleen Kennedy's primary motivation was respecting Lucas's modified vision, over and above a general profit motive, then why would she have spent any money on preserving that footage? Without a source, I can grain of salt the specifics of what you said, but I also believe that they did some level of preservation of that older stuff while creating the newest master, that seems reasonable to me... unless she was specifically more interested in preserving Lucas's vision than the film itself. You see what I mean? Preserving that footage seems like the one thing she could do that would guarantee that his vision would not be respected forever, and not preserving it would guarantee that it was. To be clear, I don't think they did much on this front, but just scanning the footage and permanently storing it would be a cost that was at best pointless and at worst would ultimately lead to Lucas's vision not being preserved. Is she just waiting for him to die?

Further, it's ultimately Disney's call, and another recent change in circumstances that could be relevant is that they released a Star Wars movie so unpopular that it made them postpone all their spin-offs for a while, so not only did they lose money on "Solo", but they lost projected earnings off of "Boba Fett" and "Obi Wan" and whatever else they decided to hold back on. While I find Falaskan's posts a bit aggressive for my taste, I do think his point that Disney is going to be looking for quick influxes of cash has some merit; in the long run, the brand will be fine, but stockholders are often more interested in the short run, and in the short run, Disney is going to make a lot less off of Star Wars in the next few years than was anticipated. Their assumption was that any Star Wars release would gross a billion dollars; even a very conservative estimate would have to credit that as at least $100 million in profit, therefore every movie that they don't release is a hundred million that they don't have on the books. There's obviously no way that any Blu-ray release is going to make up for that gap -- but, at the same time, every little bit helps. I think if Marvel Studios suddenly went more than a year without releasing a film, Disney would start looking around their archives for a quick-buck cash-in release to make their books look a little better.

Anyway, that's probably long enough to ramble about speculation. Just my two cents. I guess we'll see what happens.

Well, yours is some of the most reasonable-sounding speculation I've seen. And, for what it's worth, I certainly hope you're right.

I am only chiming in on a second post because I'm getting ready to leave work and I like to end these things on a point of agreement. And on this, we agree. I would go so far as to say, I think Disney would be *less* likely to release them to stream on Disney Plus, because I do think they will continue to push the Special Editions as the "versions of record", not because they care about George Lucas's vision, but because the CGI versions are more appealing to modern children, which is still their primary audience, for Disney Plus if not Star Wars specifically. And multiple versions would confuse people, so I don't expect them to make multiple versions available at the same time. While I think there is a strong desire among fans to own these, I don't think it's a strong enough desire that people would specifically sign up for Disney Plus just to get those three versions of those three movies, so I think the negative of releasing them in that format would outweigh any benefits they might get. Whatever release the non-special editions get, they will ultimately be bonus features, not standalone releases, and I don't know what Disney Plus plans to do about bonus features.

I want a UOT release as much as anybody but honestly, that list does mean pretty much nothing.

The only thing on there that have anything to do with a UOT release (as opposed to rereleasing the current editions) boils down to 'well, this would be a good time for it'.

That might be true but it's not particularly compelling.

And again, I hope it happens. Every time anybody has predicted a UOT release over the past ten or so I've hoped they were right. I sincerely hope this leak or whatever it is turns out to be The One True Leak or Whatever It Is.

If Disney does release any version of the OT on 4K UHD I wonder what color Luke's lightsaber will be this time on the Falcon in the first film? I am betting it is orange this time.

Nah it’ll be purple. New SE edition story change is Obi-Wan gave Luke Mace Windu’s lightsaber by mistake!

They were busy pandering to Lucas at the time as it was, leading him to believe they actually cared about his version of the sequel trilogy. Makes sense since they had just bought the rights doesn't it.

Why would they be pandering to him after the sale? That makes no sense...

You'd have to ask Disney. I'm going to assume you were alive in 2012 though (if not, you could just as easily google it), so you can dispense with feigning bewilderment.

Disney has always been perfectly content with the large amount of money that they get from casual viewers of a property without trying to maximize that profit by exploiting the super-fans.
Bad examples. Cost factor is much lower for everything you listed.
But put that aside for a minute. If the UOT fanbase is so massive, and in your opinion it’s such a surefire moneymaker, why haven’t we heard anything yet?
The stars have all aligned, so to speak. All the ducks are in order. So why not go with a massive moneymaker?
Again, try to look at it without fan blinders on. Subtract fandom from the equation. Many fans can’t/won’t do this so round-n-round we go,
Also keep in mind I’m a SW fan too. I’ve just looked at this whole situation as objectively as possible. I would gladly like to be wrong and get release news any minute.
But methinks it won’t be happening any time soon.

I’m less optimistic of it happening these days because IMO too much time has passed but who knows? None of us can predict tomorrow. If it does happen I don’t see it happening for at least a year or two at best. Hopefully not more but again we’re already reaching the stage where the market for it is shrinking evermore with each passing day.

It will happen when it happens, unless it doesn't happen.

The SEs are official canon, the UOT is not. So I don't see them going to Disney+, or ever getting a standalone release. But as a bonus on an eventual post-The Rise of Skywalker complete saga box set? That's totally plausible speculation.

I definitely do not see the OUT ever getting a solo release again. Too much time has passed with newer generations accepting the SEs as the canon variations of the films that the OUT becoming canon seems unlikely. If anything it’ll be like the Blade Runner sets which frankly I’d be ok with. The odds of it happening? Slim to none but hey everyday brings new surprises.
