Have you seen the TROS Blu-ray? Mastering appears to be similarly problematic in the present day.

If stuff looks overly blown out in the SDR Blu of TROS then I'm not surprised, in the cinema the highlights weren't particularly well resolved. Looking forward to seeing the HDR version.

PS

I'm just now looking at those Empire caps full size and the increase in detail is phenomenal in the shot of Han. It may not look as "sharp" as the old one because the contrast boosting and sharpening is gone, but the detail on his face makes the old Blu look like a DVD in comparison, I mean there's no contest. The extreme black crush is gone from the asteroid chase - though I see that despite the "new compositing" of this stuff for the 4K the ****ing garbage mattes ARE STILL THERE on several of the asteroids, and in the exact same places as the old transfer - and on Vader's suit too. The shot of the walkers looks a bit odd, I mean the lead walker looks fine while the others look a bit 'scrubbed' but they still have more fine detail than the old Blu.

The caps of Luke standing on the edge of the ship and the medium shot of the Empire look like oil paintings on the 2020 BD. Even that out-of-focus close-up of Leia looks worse in the 2020 cap without the grain or noise buzzing away in the background IMO.

In the 2020 cap, Luke's hair looks like a big brown blob. In the 2011 cap, you can see more detail. Also, the green of the lightsaber looks better.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to capture and upload all the comparison shots. For me, personally, I think it is safe to say I will pick up the new OT Blu-ray combo packs at some point (still haven't upgraded to 4K at home, even). They appear to lean much closer, color-timing wise, to the Project 4K prints/scans, and also seem to yield more detail than the 2011 BDs and the Project 4K prints/scans. Of course they are not perfect, and Star Wars releases will forever remain controversial. However, with the Project 4K stuff, we finally (Empire notwithstanding) have very high quality OT scans as companions to the official stuff. Perhaps the best of both worlds, and it's a remarkable time in home video.

Smile All 6 in 4K!

Been stuck indoors for a few weeks, but since we got our Stimulus Check, I went out this morning and found all 6 "Star Wars" movies in 4K just sitting on a shelf at Walmart , and bought them all at once! First time I've bought 'em outside of a box set since the release of the THX remasters on VHS (not counting the UOT DVDs that each came with a tpb in '06), but I don't want Disney's additional trilogy. I'd rather it end with Palpatine defeated and everybody alive, happy & together with a bright future in store for the galaxy.

My friends & I can't wait for our annual "Star Wars Day" this year!

Still no sign of them in my local Walmart or on Amazon.ca. Guess it's a waiting game.

I got a new 4K TV and wanted to see how the old non-anamorphic DVDs of the unaltered OT look on it but I couldn’t get the image to display properly. The default picture size stretches the image so that there’s no bars on the sides but it stretches it too much, more than 2.35:1. I clicked through the different choices that squeeze and zoom and none of them display the image properly with bars on all four sides or zoomed in while keeping the original aspect ratio. Is there some other setting I’m missing?

Does your TV not have an original, just, or 1:1 setting?

There’s auto, direct (which shows the full picture), normal (zooms slightly to cut a small amount of the sides off), stretch, and zoom. All of these are stretching the image on my unaltered OT discs.

"Zoom" SHOULD do the trick without distorting; very strange. Does your player have the ability to zoom? My Oppo 203 has a wide variety of options in that regard.

I don’t think so. I have a Sony BDP-S3700 and I couldn’t find it. I googled if it has a zoom feature and someone asked the same thing on the Sony forum and a moderator said this particular model doesn’t have it.

I find it strange that I can’t even watch the disc in its original format with bars on all four sides. The image is always stretched to the edges of the screen no matter what picture mode it’s set on.

Set the aspect ratio in the players menu to display 4:3 content in 4:3 and not stretch. Then use Zoom on the TV.

Sounds like the player thinks you have a 4:3 TV?

I tried that. Didn’t work. I tried different combinations in my player settings for 4:3, letterbox and pan & scan, 480i resolution. None of these change the aspect ratio correctly. My old 720p TV displayed these old discs correctly and I never had to change the settings in my player. So it’s probably that my TV can’t display them correctly.

I don’t think so. That’s what I was trying to do. To make it think my TV is 4:3 so it would display the letterboxed discs correctly.

If it thinks your TV is 4:3 it'll do exactly what you're describing, stretch it to fill your screen horizontally.

Why do you think telling it your TV is 4:3 will make it display correctly on a 16:9 TV?

Why would it stretch the image if it thinks my TV is 4:3? To me it makes sense that if my player thinks my TV is 4:3, then it’ll display a non-anamorphic letterboxed DVD as a 4:3 image with bars on all four sides. This is what CreasyBear suggested above and it makes sense to me, even though it didn’t work with my particular player and TV.

If it thinks your TV is 4:3 it thinks the 4:3 image should fill the TV.
