Dolby Stereo Wiki

Quote:
By splitting the optical track into two, and employing a matrix similar to those currently being used for domestic "Quadraphonic" systems it was possible to provide a four channel stereo system using the same speaker layout as had been used for the CinemaScope 4-track magnetic stereo system of the 1950s but at far lower cost.

The original Dolby Stereo was first used on the 1975 Ken Russell film Lisztomania, in a 3-channel LCR configuration. The success of 1977's Star Wars, which used the four channel system to great effect, did much to encourage movie theaters to convert to the 4-channel LCRS speaker configuration.
Forty years of cinema innovation: Hollywood & 'FJI' celebrate a Dolby milestone

Quote:
Dolby Stereo Optical

Dolby Stereo optical divided the area used on the 35mm into two channels, each with Dolby A-type NR, resulting in stereo capabilities, lower noise and higher fidelity. The first versions of Dolby Stereo soundtracks were introduced experimentally with the film Tommy, which premiered in London in February 1975. In September 1975, the first feature film for general release with a basic Dolby Stereo optical soundtrack was Lisztomania. By the spring of 1976, Dolby had gone one step further by adding a surround channel using 4-2-4 matrix encoding techniques improved by Dolby for motion picture use. The 1976 remake of A Star is Born was the first 35mm Dolby Stereo optical film in commercial release with an encoded surround track. At long last, the industry had a low-cost alternative to expensive magnetic soundtracks.

The widespread introduction of Dolby Stereo also coincided with the release of some of the most beloved movies in history. In May 1977, Star Wars (later renamed Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope) appeared in 46 U.S. theatres in Dolby 70mm, and with all 35mm prints being Dolby Stereo Optical with an encoded surround channel.

Exhibitors who didn’t have access to the 70mm version realized that by the addition of a Dolby cinema sound processor and other upgrades to their sound equipment, they could improve their sound sometimes dramatically. The runaway success of Star Wars greatly increased public awareness of Dolby Stereo and triggered a wave of installations. In turn, Star Wars won an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Sound the following year. Many other titles followed, and Dolby Stereo Optical became the industry’s choice for widespread economical stereo releases.

ok, fine, ANH did have it, BUT most cinema's did NOT.
The majority of people here probably only heard it in MONO.

And we can't conduct a poll, because i bet most people:
1 - didn't care then
- or -
2 - wouldn't remember

Hey, idk if anybody has posted this yet, but looks like George found a company to do the 3D conversion. Also, there is a pic from the podrace in Episode 1, and it looks really sharp, could this be a Blu-Ray shot??? Here's the link: http://www.starwars.com/movies/saga/..._3d/index.html
Also to add, on Prime Focuses website, they have an image of Darth Maul. Again, he looks very sharp and detailed, so I think these are really BD images!!!

That PodRace picture looks weird.
It looks like Sebulba's Pod is in front of his Engines.
Basically, it looks like Sebulba is driving Head-On towards Anakin...

Here is a more blown up picture on Prime focuses website, but it has to be the BD, it's way too clear compared to the DVD: http://www.primefocus3d.com/star-wars-episode-1.html

U sure, I looked on the internet and found one, and the color scheme looked a lot more pink, which is what we are used to, and this image has more exact color

I meant Sebulba's PodRacer, not the picture colour.

So if it doesn't change anything, then why make the change at all?

So it doesn't change that scene either. The ship is revealed well before any comment from Luke.
Sounds to me like you're just splittin' hairs here.

Who knows, originally Vader could have just been very far away at that time from whatever platform his shuttle had been parked on and because he was in a hurry and so livid with rage about what just happened, he didn't want to walk very far and demanded it be brought to where he currently was. Plus, "Bring my shuttle" just always sounded cooler. Ahem, in my opinion.

And Yoda's comments about the true nature of their beings. Anakin doesn't manifest as a corpse, so why should he be beholden to the limitations of the flesh. When Yoda makes it clear they're not. And besides, Luke doesn't know either ghost as his father. He never knew him outside of Darth vader except as the corpse he spends a few moments with before leaving the Death Star II.
But didn't Vader turn back into Anakin just before he died? And if Yoda's comments about the true nature of their beings really holds true, and if he's not beholden to the limitations of the flesh, then wouldn't Anakin be able to appear as whichever form he wanted? So by that rationale, wouldn't it make more sense to appear to Luke as a form that Luke would be able to recognize better? And no, Luke might not have known Anakin that well, but he saw him long enough to definately be able to recognize his ghost in Sebastian Shaw's form with without the scars, burns, abrasions, pasty white skin and lack of hair. That's seems like just another case of splittin' hairs.

Oh, and "Humpty Dumpty"? Not cool man. I'd take him and his warm, friendly smile over Hayden and his creepy, child-molester grin any day of the week

Honestly, without a mini-clip, it could just be an enhanced picture.
It is less Pink and more defined.
It could also be from the BluRay as this looks like it has NOT been converted to 3D yet.

One of my favorite lines from Empire because of James Earl Jones brilliant delivery. "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival" just doesn't have the same oomph as "Bring me my shuttle."

It would be nice if this was from the BD, cause I can tell ya, that's an awesome improvement if that truly is a BD image. Something to look forward to!!
I also just noticed that the picture is zoomed out a bit, BD's show more picture than DVDs right?

Exactly, and it fit better with how angry and full of rage he was at the moment.

#4 - He still says that. And unless you've seen A New Hope before, you have no idea that that IS the Falcon
#5 - Yes
1 - Characters were messed with which in turn affected the story. This changed the story, albeit only to a small extent. But changed nonetheless.

2 - Han's shoot-first-ask-questions-later attitude along with his rebellious life style was what made him Han. This scene made a statement, Han is a survivor and he has no problem taking a life if it means saving his skin which is important because at the end of ANH, he selflessly comes back to help out the rebellion. After that he's not much of a bad-ass but he has his moments.

The scene is pretty much the same either way; Han was defending himself in both versions.. but in one he doesn't care to wait until Greedo attempts to kill him so he comes off as more aggressive and less hesitant to take drastic action in order to save his own skin. Plus the new scene just looks laughably bad.

3. Being introduced to SW through ROTJ, Jabba was very menacing and frightening to me. I guess to a kid he's worse than the Emperor who is just an old guy in a black cloak.

4. We get the point that it's Han's ship since Han is standing right there as we get a good look at it for the first time. I didn't say that he doesn't say "what a piece of junk" in the SE, but just that I thought it was better that we're introduced to the famous ship when Luke calls it a piece of junk in the theatrical version.

5. I'm unaware of how Luke would know who Hayden is.

Palpatine is not a stupid person, he never (except once) overlooked anything.

In fact, that one thing that he did overlook was Anakin's love for Padme'.
If Palpatine had used a different personother than Anakin to tempt Luke to the Dark Side with Luke would've turned as well... It was only Luke's love for his father and Anakn's love for Padme and her last little bit of her that made him turn back.
The components are pretty common and probably universally applicable. It would make no sense to try and remove all those parts from the galaxy.

And no, it is near impossible to buy a completed lightsaber, I was talking about the components.

Plus he didn't know who survived. The survivors would still have their lightsabers.

What point were you trying to make?

EDIT: Ok, I got it. Sorry! It didnīt look that good even in the Trailer 1999.
