You can take an HD image and blow it up by double before you start to see the same amount of granularity you have with a 35mm negative. George Lucas did some tests that I flew up to see, and it corresponded to what we'd found. I'd say the Sony HD 900 series cameras are generating an image that's about equivalent to a 65mm original negative".

Just got a reply from Rik henderson, who was at the Blu-Ray preview event and wrote the article posted earlier:

Quote:
As I was also at the launch of the Original Trilogy DVD box set, and spoke to Lowry Digital, who made the digital masters, it is my belief that the Blu-rays are created from the same masters as the DVDs. However, Lowry Digital originally created either 4k2k or 8k4k masters at the time (my memory is a little vague) not 1080p ones. And I believe it is these that have been used as the basis for the new BD transfers. Certainly, they are considerably better than either the DVD versions or 1080i TV broadcasts.
So it does indeed seem that they are using the old transfers for this Blu-Ray set. The main thing about this is that, although the picture will most probably be slightly sharper, the colour & picture problems that plagued the 2004 DVD set are probably still going to be there. For certain the crushed black will remain. They cannot go back and recover all the detail lost due to this. And for those that will still say that they could have fixed these issues, then you have to remember that the colouring of the films was done BEFORE they were passed onto Lowry to do the clean up work so, unless they started from scratch, then these problems will remain. but not only the colouring, but also Lowry's algorithm used for the clean up had some undesired side effects; It eliminated sections of the starfields, bleached out a lot of laserblasts throughout the movies and other problems.

There is still a small part of me that is hopeful for a complete new transfer, but it isn't looking very hopeful. 7 years to get this thing right and they use an outdated and flawed transfer.

I would say email Lucasfilm about it, but none of mine got replies about anything, so that's out of the question.

There may be another box set in the future...

To use the secondary characters on the disc covers must say something, is this merely a feeler set?

The box seems like the Superman Box, sort of what was there before with better transfers but not too difficult to get out there and sell. Get some money to see what interest there would be in another box further down the line.

This will not be the final physical release of Star Wars!

I hope this isn't the case either, and it is still too early, but if it is, should we really be surprised? After all, Lucasfilm did use outdated masters for the OOT DVD's and also stated that nothing was wrong with the quality of TPM DVD, when everyone could clearly see it.

Just placed my pre-order. Does anyone else think that the price on the set will drop before the release date, just as the price on the Lord of The Rings Extended Edition Blu-Rays dropped? Personally, I'm hoping the price hits at least 75 dollars on release day.

That does not sound too promising considering that they have had years to do these things. So what will the consensus on this board or in this thread be if in fact that is the case?

Part of me wants to jump right in and buy the release no matter what but the other part wants to wait and see how well they turn out. I'm pretty positive Episodes II and III will look flawless on Blu-ray, Episode I may need some work and by most accounts it has had it. But if they use the 2004 masters for the origianl trilogy then there's only so far they can digitally grade these without messing them up and we haven't had any reports that any of the colour issues have been addressed and as people have pointed out you can't retrieve the detail lost from the crushed blacks no matter what you do.

I wouldn't be surprised if they original trilogy is identical to the 2004 release but I'll be bitterly disappointed if it is and it will mean Lucasfilm have wasted seven years.

All this is just specualtion of course and we should know more soon. I hope it's good news.

Well, of course not. There's the 3-D versions coming. The question is whether or not Blu-Ray will still exist by the time those are ready to be released.

Or if Blu-ray 3D will exist for that matter. It is under performing due to limited content and high prices for the 3D titles.

It seems all depends on that fateful day in September, be it September 12 for some of us, or September 16. I will not cancel my pre-order, as I'm hoping for good news.

Why are people even pretending like they're not going to buy these? No one on this site is honestly going to be like "I'd rather just watch them on DVD!"

Some people might have a lower price they'll wait for before they purchase, but you people trying to act like "I'm going to cancel" are full of it.

Because you can't spend hundreds of hours of your life ranting and raving online about how George Lucas is raping your childhood and then be like "yeah, I'm buying it though".

That's the thing though, "pretend" is the key word because they ARE gonna buy it, they're just gonna maintain the illusion that they aren't.
