3 hours of movie + 2 filmstrips for 3D + twice as many frames = excessively bulky film...
With MVC encoding, they reduce the digital file size quite a bit, using the 2D version, with the 3D overlapped somehow. More data, but not as bad as if they had 2 separate versions. Not sure how theaters play it, so it might be bulky as you suggest for file size.

I hope Hobbit 3D releases a new trailer soon. The first one they keep showing doesn't have many action moments at all, but strong 3D.

Has it been noted here that apparently the 48FPS thing is being abandoned by Jackson and co? The movies will be projected 'normally'

Interesting. I was thinking about this today, and Avatar 2 using 48 fps. Twice as much data as 24 standard fps for live action cinema.

Twilight Zone had a used car episode that seemed to play in full speed like a soap opera, and it didn't seem as professional as the other episodes because of it.

If it's anything to go on, the theatrical Hobbit 3D and 2D trailers all seem to resemble classic 24 fps motion.

But like anything, 48 fps will take some getting used to for audience acceptance.

I misread the article, it seems that the 48 FPS is being limited like you say!

It complements 3D and makes viewing 3D a pleasure. 3D is incredibly better in 60p and to a slightly lesser degree 48p. The strobing in current 3D filmmaking is irritating and evil!
I'd like to see Hobbit 3D in 48 fps also. Hopefully they'll have it at Cinemark 3D.

Apparently a third Hobbit film is in the works for 2014, after the first two 3D ones in 2012, 2013. To me, this is cool news. Thoughts?

They shot one season on video (season 2, I believe) then went back to film.

All the trailers so far are 24fps extractions, created by dropping half the frames per second. For the 24fps version of the feature some motion blur will be added. I don't know if the blur was added to the trailers.

Obviously varying a lot from the orignal Tolkein story. I think its a mistake to make it as long as Lord of the Rings.

Personally, I'm pretty excited to see the story elements from the appendices mixed in with The Hobbit. Sounds like a new creative approach that's never been done before, even in Tolkein's novels. Should be epic.

I am all for it. Because this is it so it's nice to see Peter tries to bridge the movies.

I got no camera movement on the 24fps and judder on the 60fps clip.

But then my laptop is a few years old and not the most powerful in the world.

It was actually only about 5-6 episodes of season 2 that were shot on video

Screenwriters consider 90 pages of screenplay 90 minutes, the Hobbit averaging 300 pages or so (depending on text size) last time I checked, so there is always room for more IMO, even if the third one took place after the Hobbit.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. Not sure what their argument can be stating subtle 3D is better than strong 3D, as subtle 3D is what gives 3D a bad name.

HOBBIT 3D Trailer 2: plays before Dredd 3D. Strong filmed 3D and we finally get to see the enemies including the warg wolves, trolls, goblins, etc. Can't wait! Caught the trailer before Dredd 3D.

Oh, wow. they are making it a trilogy? I had no idea. That's odd, but very cool to know there will be plenty more to come. After a taste of this world in 3D, one just won't be enough.

It's not like Tolkein translates that well into film. It's so so so dry.

The Hobbit is going to look fantastic on a 4K set, not to mention in theaters!

The last shot in the 2nd Hobbit 3D trailer had the Dredd 3D audience I was with laughing.
[Show spoiler]It was a scene of the dwarves stuck underneath a crushed bridge, and they said something like "I don't think things can get much worse" and then a giant Troll monster fell on top of them at the last second.

From the 2nd trailer, this one looks very faithful to the book, which I just finished reading again. Only about 300 pages. Great book. It'll be interesting to see where Peter Jackson decides to split the movie in two. Looking forward to seeing Smaug the Dragon in the 2nd movie.

The 3rd one I have no idea how they're going to go about other than the appendices from Return of the King laying out the history between Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring. Still glad to hear there's more than two.

Glad they played it before Dredd. The Hobbit's 3D 2nd trailer's 3D, like the first one, was consistent and really well done. Easy to distinguish 3D layers between the dwarves, Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, the trolls, goblins, eagles, wargs and other creatures and scenery.
