Once I updated the firmware, my Belkin N1 has been rock-solid.

Using a Linksys Wirless G router, great speed. My RR ISP gives a whopping 5mbps on the download stream, demos and downloads that are 700mb only take 15 to 20 mins to download.

I configured my router to limit my DHCP address pool to 10 hosts, enabled WPA-TKIP encryption for security, use static IPs for my Computers which nessary for port fowarding bittorent through the firewall. Only Game consoles are set to be DHCP clients.

If it's over your head get some one to do it for you :P

I bought a linksys Wireless N router ($89) about two weeks ago and it works awesome with my PS3 which is about 25 feet away. I started on-line gaming and it hasn't disconnected because of my signal yet. I highly recommend it.

Default Three follow-up questions.

Would my wireless signal be line of sight to infinity or would it be line of sight with some range limit? (A store guy said something about a four mile range and somebody said the range limit was 150 feet.)

The internet lag here refers to the speed rates that you get limited by with current wireless technologies. For the PS3, we'll talk about it's fastest supported protocol, 802.11g gives you a standard throughput of 19 MBit/s and max data of 54 MBit/s. That's noticably less than most people's rates [now, the 320k download/upload brings up the good question, is that's bytes or bits? with those numbers, if it's high-speed, that sounds alot like bytes so bear that difference in mind too]. Consider : my router is a g router, and gives my ps2 54MBit, the physical connection it has with my PC gives it a gigabit [which effectively means it's limited by my cablemodem].

Not sure what to make of this. Are you saying 320k cable download might be 2.5 mbit/sec? If so, what does that mean in terms of possible internet lag? 2.5 vs 54 MBit/s sounds like a pretty puny comparison, maybe causing problems and disappointment.

PS3 will really only run PS3, PS2, and PS1 games. There are flight sims, but they use the sixaxis controller. Near as I can tell for the PS3 there aren't flight stick style games or controllers coming out, but I'm not the best person to ask regarding those games, they're not my thing so I don't research them .

Another consider if you're looking at a wireless network. Look at your phones. If you have a cordless phone, you're going to be in for some discomfort if it's a 2.4ghz band [and even some annoyance if it's a 5Ghz band if you step up to an 802.11n network].

I do have a cordless phone...don't know its band. If I find out my phone bandwidth, what adjustments can I make (if any) to avoid conflicts with a wireless internet router?
Thanks

Okay, so I just got back from Best Buy and I finally picked up my wireless router (drum roll please).

I decided to go with a Belkin wireless g. I was torn between this, one of the Linksys, and the Netgear WPN824. My first choice was the Netgear, but being new to routers, I did not like the idea of a difficult installation. It also seemed to have a lot more "capabilities" than I really needed. A lot of reviews for this Belkin model made it sound like it was an easy process, and at half the price of the Netgear, worth a shot. Plus the security of the lifetime warranty was a big factor. I figure at the very worst if this thing never ends up working, I can get a refund or take it back and get something else, even if it craps out after a year or two. I am at work now so I have not had the chance to set it up yet. I will keep everyone updated and let you know how it works out.

BTW...I know everyone likes to hear how the HD 'war' looks like at different stores. Today at my Best Buy, the HD movies were over 2/3 blu-ray, less than 1/3 that other format. Also, they had a new Sony HDTV/blu-ray display in the TV section, very nice. Right next to it was another shelf of just BD's....life is good

BTW, it is best that the wireless router faces the right side of the PS3. The wireless antenna on the PS3 is on the right side of the player. Reception is notably betterwhen configured this way.

Good to know. I did not know that, thanks. My PS3 stands vertically so that should help, I would think.

I have a linksys A+G router that is located in a completely separate room from my PS3, and have had no connection problems. I love my PS3 and Blu is the only way of life

if my PS3 is rotated so that the right side faces the router, the connection is 75%, if the PS3 is rotated so that the left side faces the router, it drops to 45%.... big difference.... unfortunately for me, the normal orientation is the wrong way.

UPDATE: So I finally set up my wireless router when I got home. I have to say that I am very pleased so far (I realize it has only been 1 day). Set up was a breeze, less than 10 minutes. Once complete, I had no problem updating the PS3's 1.81 firmware or downloading the Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo from the PS store (awesome demo BTW). I also had no problem connecting my Wii to update it, I know, I'm sorry, I said the dreaded "W" word.

I have yet to try online gaming, so we'll see how that goes, maybe tonight after work. I set up WPA encryption and MAC address filtering so hopefully only my PS3 and Wii will be able to connect to my router. I also disabled SSID broadcasting so if people in adjacent apartments try scanning for a wireless network, mine won't show up.

Does anybody have any more suggestions on how to keep my network as secure as possible? Also, has anybody encountered router firewall problems while gaming online and had to put their PS3 in the DMZ. From reading the router manual, it sounds like this might have to happen for some online gaming. Is it a high security risk, any experiences or thoughts?

I've had my netgear wireless g+ about 6 months now. it's been rock solid. never had a problem connecting. it sits about 50 ft away from my ps3 and the connection strength is amazing! best part is it was only $50 at staples!

D-Link DIR-655 awesome router no problems with PS3 or Vonage here, good luck.
I have used Lynsis, Motorola and U.S. Robotics, by far D-Link has been the best.

Yeah, I got the same. Excelent router. I had a Belkin. It was OK. No IP reservations, and overheated. I had a linksys and I nearly put an axe thru it. I hated it.

The dir655 is a great one though.

Cool

I bought a Belkin N router. For the first week it was fine, then just S#!T. So I bought a linksys G router and it worked fine but had a problem every couple of days. I updated the firmware and it works great now.
