So right now i'm on the fence about whether or not to get a Blu-ray player, so maybe you guys can help me out with some questions? My maximum price range is probably $250 and I mostly want one to watch high def. movies and upscale my huge DVD collection.
1. My TV is a LG 42LG50 42-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV...which Blu player would you recommend for that TV? 2. I have a lot of Region 2 DVDs, will those play on a Region A player? Or does it have to be region free or what? Thanks a lot for your help! Last edited by naughd07; 10-01-2009 at 06:20 PM. |

Your region 2 DVDs will not play on a stand-alone Region A blu-ray player, or Region A PS3. You'll need a region free player for them.
As for the player, the new entry level Sony's are fine in that price range, but like the earlier poster said - you may just want to get a PS3 for a few bucks more. |

Right now the market for All region Blu-Ray/DVD players is limited.
Practically, the only known player that can do that is the MOMITSU: http://www.hkflix.com/hardware/xq/as...qx/details.htm The player has been altered from it's original configuration so it can play Blu Rays and dvd's no matter if they are region locked or contain PAL material It seems that the OPPO player (BDP 83,a way better one, but more expensive) can play PAL discs, but is region locked. There's a hardware modification circulating in internet by which it can be converted to Region Free, but I personally don't know if it works fine. The only reason why you should consider any of these two options is if you plan to buy more Blu Rays from Europe or coded "B" or "C". If not, buy a good brand Blu Player (e.g. Sony or Panasonic) and get a Region free dvd player for your dvds that can do the upgrade (I strongly reccomend the OPPO DV 80-H). http://www.oppodigital.com/?partner=...ID=40390892011 |

You may also want to look at the players from Sony and Panasonic (Sony S360 and Panasonic BD60), as both could probably be had in your $250 price range and are pretty well-regarded in that price range.
Region A players will typically be region-locked to Region 1 for DVD, so a Region 2 DVD wouldn't play. |
