Default PS3 Slim - Momentary Screen Blackout?

Happy New Year!

A friend of mine just got a PS3 Slim for Christmas, and he has it hooked to his Sony Bravia 55" KDL-55V5100 via a Phillips HDMI cable. Blu-ray video is set at 1080p/24fps enabled. Ocassionally, while watching a movie or playing a game, the screen will go black for a second and then continue playing normally. While I was there I saw this happen once, while his son was playing Skate 2.

Has anyone experienced this before, or do you have any suggestions? Is it the result of a HDCP handshaking issue, faulty HDMI connection, or failing GPU?

Should he take back the PS3 and exchange it? That was my suggestion. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have the same TV (46" model) and a PS3 slim hooked up to it and I've never encountered this before.
First I'd try resetting the PS3 to default settings and doing the auto setup for video again. If it's still doing it then I have no clue what might be causing it but if it happens often try to narrow down the source of the problem:

1. Hook up a different HDMI cable
2. Try hooking it up using non-HDMI cable (composite for example) to know if it's HDMI related at all.
3. Hook PS3 slim up (in same manner) to a different TV, if problem persists return the PS3.

If he doesn't have an extra HDMI cable or TV available, I'd say just return it to be on the safe side.

I've had a similar problem with my PS3 (non-slim). Sometimes while watching a movie I would get blackouts or fuzz showing up on the screen. At times the fuzz would not go away until I jiggled the HDMI cable either at the TV or the PS3. Wasn't sure if it was the cable itself or the port at that time. This past weekend the blackouts got much worse while playing games on the PS3 so I switched the HDMI cable out.. so far so good but it's only been a day or so.

I agree with Rike's suggestions.

Thanks guys. I'll pass on these suggestions to my friend. If you can think of anything else, please let me know.

Definitely sounds like a handshake issue. I had a Philips HDMI cable from a few years ago that gave me the same problem. Once I swapped the cable, I had no more problems.

Either make sure the cable is in there nice and tight or get a new cable altogether.

Agreed. Definitely a handshaking issue. Check the cables - they're the most likely culprit.

I have the same issue, but my PS3 didn't start doing this until I introduced a Sony STR-DG720 receiver inbetween my Sony XBR4. As of now I have not been able to figure out the issue. I've tried moving ports, and several HDMI cables. May not be the same issue at all as my PS3 is not a Slim.

Mine is doing this now too, and it didn't used to. I have tried 2-3 cables, all Monoprice. I guess I'll try another. It does it in spurts, and then won't for a while.

60GB PS3 to 4300ES receiver to XBR4, but I know the signal is dropping between the PS3 and receiver since teh receiver display changes when it happens.
