Default Can HD-DVD do Linear-PCM?

I have a question

a friend was telling me that HD-DVD can do Linear-PCM. I didn't think they could.

I've searched but was looking for something about the true differences, spec wise between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to show him.

thanks

it could in theory do it. but, the bandwidth required is so large good luck mixing it with a movie

There are three HD DVD titles with LPCM.

A Musicares Person of the Year Tribute
Freedom Vol. 1
Choronos

Some big hitters there. HD DVD as a whole is way behind the next gen audio curve compared to Blu-ray. It is mostly due to the limitations of the format.

Not as lame as the total number of titles they have that even had lossless audio, a paltry 50 and their big exclusive titles coming out this fall don't even have it. Blu-ray has 176 and all of the big titles coming will have lossless audio.

I believe HD DVD is only capable of 2 channel LPCM as it doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle 5.1 or more.

That's pathetic, happy I am Blu.

I have been reading a lot of articals about an HD DVD 51 gig disk being
approved, has it been or am I getting bad info. I was thinking with 17 gigs
a layer that the pits of info may have to be closer will you need a new HD
DVD player to read the 17 gig disks.

I have also read Blu Ray as of now can support only two layers is this true?

Approved or not, it may be a while before we ever see it in the market. It's highly doubtful they'll come out with a version of HD DVD or BD that will obsolete all the current players. That would effectively kill the format, and amazingly these companies aren't that stupid. Almost that stupid, but not quite.

I posted almost exactly the same thing here
