Default Can HD-DVD do Linear-PCM?

I have a question

a friend was telling me that HD-DVD can do Linear-PCM. I didn't think they could.

I've searched but was looking for something about the true differences, spec wise between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray to show him.

thanks

There are three HD DVD titles with LPCM.

A Musicares Person of the Year Tribute
Freedom Vol. 1
Choronos

Some big hitters there. HD DVD as a whole is way behind the next gen audio curve compared to Blu-ray. It is mostly due to the limitations of the format.

Not as lame as the total number of titles they have that even had lossless audio, a paltry 50 and their big exclusive titles coming out this fall don't even have it. Blu-ray has 176 and all of the big titles coming will have lossless audio.

I believe HD DVD is only capable of 2 channel LPCM as it doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle 5.1 or more.

...but hd-dvd-er will tell you video and audio of the main presentation doesn't matter.
what matters most is the extras.

yes. I rarely watch extras. I'd rather have good visual and audio performance than extras.... The main feature is the movie, not the extras. And slowly but surely, blu will have BDJ titles

And it is not just the extras it is to make sure that the extras only play in a tiny window that overlays the movie.

There won't be any because hi-def formats (including HD DVD) don't want 2 channels stereo sound. They want to promote 5.1,6.1 and 7.1 surround sounds, especially Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD.

That's pathetic, happy I am Blu.

I have been reading a lot of articals about an HD DVD 51 gig disk being
approved, has it been or am I getting bad info. I was thinking with 17 gigs
a layer that the pits of info may have to be closer will you need a new HD
DVD player to read the 17 gig disks.

I have also read Blu Ray as of now can support only two layers is this true?

Approved or not, it may be a while before we ever see it in the market. It's highly doubtful they'll come out with a version of HD DVD or BD that will obsolete all the current players. That would effectively kill the format, and amazingly these companies aren't that stupid. Almost that stupid, but not quite.

I posted almost exactly the same thing here

I believe it turned out that just the technical specs of the Area 51 Disc were approved. It will still be at least a year until they can get it to manufacturing and there is no guarantee yet if current HD DVD players can use them. Plus this disc just gave them the space, they are still starved for bitrate so a 50gig disc like Pirates of the Carribean still couldn't be carried over to the 51gig disc.

BD has had 4 layer and 8 layer working in the lab 2 years ago. No one knows if that will ever get used, but if it does it would probably only be for storage, not movies. So BD-50 will probably be the max we see.

Even if HD DVD starts implementing their 51GB discs, they still won't use PCM as an audio option as most of their players don't even have the analog 5.1 outputs.

...so it the 5.1 output found in the higher end players, or at random. Would the lower cost players Toshiba is trying to push have the right output?

Does the Sony s300 capable of PCM as an audio option?

I'm sorry, so many questions.

It would still go out the HDMI output right?

Eitherway I don't expect them to start using PCM, there isn't any reason to. All their players have mandatory TrueHD decoding, yet few Studios are even putting that on the discs. If HD DVD has something to be worried about, that should be high up on the list.

Every BD player can output multichannel PCM via HDMI or if analog out if they have it. That is why PCM has been the standard for lossless audio on the BD side. But as time goes on, TrueHD and DTS MA HD will be standard as the vast majority of players will be able to decode that or pass it along to the receiver. The benefit is being able to use less space but still getting the same audio.

Yes it would, but then they would require everyone to have a new HDMI switching capable receiver.
Blu-ray does not, that's why most of the players have at least 5.1 analog outs, thereby allowing for audio compatibility with older receivers.

if hd dvd decided to give the customer lossless sound they included a dolby trueHD track. therefore no need for pcm.

the best bet for lossless on blu-ray was pcm. most players couldn't decode trueHD, or the DTS-MA.

I'm betting on the PCM being dropped off most BD discs in the future, so I upgraded to the samsung 1400 player. that really sucks because i loved the 1200 player.

sony is all about giving you the best sound, but in a lot of cases they made it difficult to take advantage of it. Hd dvd has the pieces in place, but did not utilize it as much as i think they should.
