Default Apple TV app coming to Roku starting today, October 15

The Apple TV app is finally being released for Roku devices today.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/10/15/...shows-features

Quote:
With Apple TV Plus set to arrive next month, Apple is making sure Roku owners will be ready to stream its original programming. Today, the Apple TV app is launching for Roku streaming players and Roku TVs.

The app will be available from Roku’s Channel Store when it goes live. It’s a free download, and customers will be able to directly subscribe to Apple TV Plus, which will cost $4.99 per month, from within the app starting on November 1st.

Aside from featuring Apple TV Plus content, the app also provides access to your iTunes video library. Optional Apple TV Channel subscriptions for HBO, Starz, and other premium networks are also accessible from the app. Like on other platforms, the Apple TV app provides personalized recommendations on what to stream from those channels.

The app should be available on most Roku products, but Roku warns that it “will not be supported by select older Roku models.” It can be downloaded in the following countries:

Argentina
Canada
Chile
Colombia
Costa Rica
El Salvador
France
Guatemala
Honduras
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Peru
Republic of Ireland
United Kingdom
United States

Quote:
Beyond access to Apple TV Plus, the app will also lets Roku owners rent or buy TV shows and movies from Apple's iTunes service, and provides a place to watch iTunes content they already purchased. In addition the app offers Apple TV Channels, services like HBO, Showtime and Starz that users can subscribe to and watch from within the TV app, without having to download those individual apps.

Apple says its TV app is coming to other devices, including the Amazon Fire TV platform as well as smart TVs from LG, Sony and Vizio, "in the future."

Roku's representative confirmed to CNET that Roku devices do not yet support Apple's AirPlay 2 standard, which allows users to control video and music using their iPhone, iPad or Mac devices. Samsung TVs, as well as smart TVs from Vizio, Sony and LG added AirPlay earlier this year.

As someone who hasn't gotten around to getting another Apple TV to go into their bedroom, this is welcome news to me, as it'll mean I will have the TV app on my Roku TV in my bedroom, which means having access to CBS and my TV show purchases.

A nice bit of welcome news this morning!

I'm pretty excited for this as I don't have an Apple TV but would like access to my iTunes library and the Apple TV+ content.

It's working.

Looks like no Dolby Vision support for Roku TVs.

Won't work on my Roku Streaming Stick either, 3800X is all it works on and I have 3600 lol Kind of dumb to only have it on the newest ones, that might hurt their initial launch subscriptions.

I was just going to watch some of the Carpool Karaoke episodes I never saw past season 1 for now... are those free or do you have to subscribe to something to be able to watch?

I have the 3600 as well

This is the cheapest device it will work on, $27 delivered:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KIKX0DER&psc=1

And yeah it sucks you don't get the menu's or extras. Perhaps they are saving that for their own overpriced box.

IMO, wait until Black Friday. Last year, the Roku Ultra was on sale for $50. You'll get the "cream of the crop" device at an affordable price and future-proof yourself for years to come.

My 3600 is only 2 years old. But yeah i should have mentioned the option i posted isn't 4k.

The set in my bedroom is a 65" plasma which i still enjoy very much so that cheap option will do just fine for me.

I tried the app out on the 4K TCL in the other bedroom and everything was great except for the missing features the Apple box has.

Nice to be able to watch iTunes stuff of the big screen finally - even if the experience is slightly butchered, for now.

I wondered if that may be the case when they announced it was coming to Roku.

Overpriced is a matter of opinion. I own 3 Roku TVs and 2 Apple TV boxes (well, technically 3, but I don't count the third). Would I prefer they were cheaper? Sure, but I don't regret the money I spent on them.

I like free apps built into televisions and game consoles myself, and have never been a fan of Apple's proprietary stuff.

But yes you are correct, it is a matter of opinion.

Mine says the same...but it’s not there. It is however on both of our Roku Ultra devices, just not on our three Roku TV’s.

Also there's no Menus or iTunes Extras.

So if a movie has multiple versions (Theatrical and Unrated cuts), it only plays the main version.

I was wondering if I was missing something because no matter what buttons I pushed on my remote I couldn't get any extras to show up. Hopefully they fix that soon.

It works fine on my Roku TV 55S517 (7118X) that I bought last year. But it doesn’t show up on my cheap 4-year old model.

I mainly just wanted to compare video quality. After looking at a sample of Winter Soldier in iTunes , I still find that prime video is the leader in video quality to my eyes.

I thought the app overall was ok and well designed, did not look to much into it.

I am on a 2017 Roku Ultra.
