Default New Plasma on the way...

No reason to post this, other than being CRAZY excited about my new screen, coming in 10 days!

...crackinhedz...I may be looking for some help with settings for this bad boy...any chance you could help a brother out?

Can't wait to get it set up and see the first BD...now just got to decide what it will be! Trying to decide between Cars, Rattatoule, Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down, or something else.

Smile Well, that's the top of line!

I've been warming up and watching my TH58-PZ800U and it is the best TV I've even seen. Yours is probably better.

You know, it's weird because at Best Buy they all looked like crap, but I think it's the lousy signal they feed to them.

Enjoy!

TomHuffman settings

...after reading around a while on the 85u, came across this guy. He's a pro calibrator with an 85u himself. This is the settings he personally came up with. It should give you a ballpark idea, if not precise settings.

Thanks for the initial settings stuff, I'll be sure to post back and let you know the results.

Any thoughts on the best 'first BD'?

Default I just watched Kung Fu Hustle!

And I was blown away again on my Panny plasma. Granted, this is not the greatest Pq movie, but I love it for other reasons. It just has more impact on the plasma.

Plasmas are better!!!!!

crackinhedz...how close do you think these may be to ballpark for the 850? Even if it's in the infield, it'd be a decent start maybe?

I'm definitely gonna get a pro calibration after break-in, but I want to at least be close 'outta the box' if you know what I mean

Sorry just saw this now. Local HT specialty store, where they actually are properly trained and tell you the truth. I'm a retailers worst nightmare, as by the time I walk into a store I usually know more than they do...I research the shit out of everything.

Talked to him about everything... Plasma vs LCD, burn, the 'mystery flicker' some people think they see in the Pannys in 24p, service from Pioneer vs Panasonic, break in period, Professional calibration, HDMI cables, etc.

Plus, I got the unit for $3500. Could have got the comparable Pioneer for about $4200, but they've seen some serious issues with Pioneer on warranty. He didn't feel, and neither do I, that the Pioneer was $700 better.

He let me mess around with the settings, hook up a BD, had the web interface hooked up and showed me how to update firmware for the TV via internet, etc.

All in all, even if the TV was less $ at BB or somewhere else, I would spend the extra to buy it there. The peace of mind is worth a few extra bucks. If I have the TV for 5 years, it's like 5-10 $ a month difference. I spend more than that on coffee every week.

FYI, if anyone's curious, there's a thread over at AVS specifically for this TV.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1039589

There's also some great discussion there on break-in, and a couple of conversations recapped from calls to the Panasonic Concierge.

One post that caught my attention was the one dealing with the alleged 'flicker' issue in 24p.

You'll find a lot of posts like this:

It did bother me at first but I stuck it out and it seemed to get better. The amount of detail and clarity is pretty incredible. Dark scenes or even fast paced scenes do not show any flicker and are absolutely stunning! I am in love.

During panning shots, backgrounds appeared more...how can I put this...fixed? More real? I know I shouldn't perceive the lack of judder as an increase in detail, but that's the way it looked to me vs. the 60 Hz mode.
This is what I've been saying for months.

OK, so after debating last night between the 800 and 850, I picked up the 850 this morning.

I'm speechless. This is unreal, and crazy exciting. Used the CNET settings for initial setup, and will run the break in images when I'm not watching (full screen watching until after breakin).

HAD to check out a few minutes of CARS, Rattatoui, and Planet Earth. My wife, not by any means an expert on any of this, walked into the room. Her jaw dropped.

I'm pleased with the choice, and I'm grateful for all the help with the newbie questions. As I get into playing with the settings, I'll be back with more questions I'm sure.

Thanks all!

I can't wait for my 50" 850u to arrive. However, I'm starting to get really pi***d at the place where I bought it. I've been waiting since before Thanksgiving only to received one with a smashed inner screen the Monday before Christmas. The one guy told me last week that I was supposed to have it today, but low and behold I'm still watching my Samsung LCD.
