Comments from NPD analyst, Anita Frazier, are below.

Overall

"August industry sales remain strong and realized a 9% gain over last August, although the month posted the first single-digit percentage growth in 27 months"

"Despite smaller growth this month, the industry is up 32% year-to-date and remains on target to achieve annual revenues in the range of $22 to $24 billion"

"Across hardware, software and accessories, products for the Wii platform contributed 28% of total industry dollar sales for the month of August"

Hardware

"The PSP and PS3 systems achieved the greatest percentage gain of all now-gen systems. The sales acceleration of these systems, combined with the recent Xbox 360 price cuts should fuel future growth of this category"

Software

"Madden NFL '09 was the top-selling game of the month, and launched with 2.3 million units out of retail doors in it's first month, besting last year's '08 title by 2%. Year after year, the industry can count on the Madden release to bring folks into stores during the relatively lazy days of late summer"

"Year-to-date, Grand Theft Auto IV remains the top-selling game at 4.8 million units sold in the U.S. through August"

"Wii Play continues its remarkable track record, achieving a 44% attach rate to new Wii hardware sales for the month. It has remained a top-10 game each month since it's February 2007 introduction"

Accessories

"Xbox Live point cards and gold membership cards represented three of the top-10 accessory items for the month which sheds a little light onto the popularity of this service to Xbox 360 fans"

should be interesting for the rest of the year. i saw bloomberg reporting sales have doubled for the 360 since the price drop, only a week, but it happened.

People need to remember that sales have doubled over the previous week which was lower than usual. Also pricecuts are always very front loaded (unless it is a significant one, which this isn't) the number of people willing to buy a tard pack at $199 is relatively similar to the number who would buy it at $249.

I think the PS3 will come out on top once the full hardware bundles are revealed to the public.

ah see the article said nothing about it being over the previous week (that i remember anyways). but i never expected the price cut to make all that big of a difference, should be interesting nonetheless

edit: the article totally did mention over the previous *weekend* actually lol. which is even less impressive. no numbers were revealed. so i wonder why they even released the info

It's a bit annoying to see the result of the $399 40 Gb PS3 shortages and the $299 clearance price of the 20gb Xbox model at the same time, but oh well

Those NPD numbers are just wrong, after all we were all informed that 360 owners would rush out to buy Tales and Infinite Undiscovery, after all the 360 is an RPG haven.

Seriously, I'm not surprised at the low numbers, August was a pretty bad month for releases.

I guess we'll see how Microsoft's "Sell the Razor without the Blade" strategy pays off the rest of the year.

Who informed us of that? I cant recall anyone saying that RPGs on the 360 were going to sell big.

Well according the BS media and 360 fanboys, the ps3 losing RPG's was bad and was going to affect the console war (it hasn't)
and the 360 getting all of the RPG's was going to make ps2 and 3 owners flock to 360 (they haven't ....i didn't)

Sony needs to phase the PS2 out a little quicker. That'd pick up sells for the PS3 system and games!

Wouldn't make sense since the system is still generating some $$ for Sony. Besides, I would like to see this continued support for a system even after its successor has already been out for a bit instead of just dropping it completely just because a newer system has hit the market.

Well, id rather see them drop support, at least first party, just because it ties up alot of assets.

If Sony would bring back a PS3 SKU with BC, they could still offer cheaper PS2 games...
