Is it possible to have the video out from the PS3 as component and assign the HDMI as audio only to the reciever? I have an older RCA HDTV and it only has Component inputs. I was wondering if I bought a new reciever that has HDMI inputs if I could send the audio out to it using the HDMI but still be able to use the component out at the same time? Basically I want to run component to the TV and HDMI to the reciver at the same time. Some people have told me you can't do this and others have said you can. I didn't want to waste the money on a new HDMI reciever if I can't get the HD ausio tracks to work. I know I can't convert HDMi to component and I'm not trying to do that, I just want to hear the new HD surround formats. Thanks!

Because one works for his tv, and the other doesn't. Did you read the post?
OP, personally I'd maybe look at investing in a new HDTV before the receiver. I had some old RCA HDTV's (member of the family works there and we got them super cheap) and... well, they're not so good. I've had 3 or 4 different models and am now on an LCD via HDMI and there is a world of difference. I would recommend the set first and then consider the receiver. |

Yeah it works just fine. That's how i have mine setup, but I have DVI hook up. I have an HDMI to DVI for video and Optical to my receiver.

just go to "display settings" under "settings" on the ps3's XMB menu. then assign the video out to "component." then it will ask if you want to assign the audio settings. set it to output of "hdmi" and you should be set. i've had my ps3 outputting of multiple outputs when i took it to my friends house one time

Sounds similar to what mine was, though instead of direct TV it had a built in sub. Thing was literally 170lbs.
Well, if you decide you want to go receiver first for sure, then definitely do that. You can't go wrong with an Onkyo or Yamaha or Marantz at that price range. Just make sure it's not HDMI passthrough as those won't get your HD sound from the PS3. If you pick out a model and post it I'm sure folks here can help you decide if it's a good purchase. Since your budget didn't mention speakers, what kind of setup do you currently have? Oh, and just for the record, I'm not trying to bash your TV set. I just wanted to let you know there was better out there. We all have to make choices for where we are and our budget. I used RCA for many years (even without HD content on it outside of my xbox 360). |
