Default Onkyo Setup Question

ok i feel stupid to ask this. on my Onkyo 605. i only have a 5.1 setup and i am trying to figure out what terminals to connect my rear speakers to.

Do i hook them up to

Surround Left And Right

Or

Surround Back Left And Right

I do not seem to be getting much sound out of my rears...no where near as much as i used to on my old receiver, i have run the audessey and have adjusted the volumes etc so i want to make sure i have it hooked up right. Thanks Guys

Because you had it too loud before? You can always go in after Audyssey and edit the settings to your taste. Pop the db's up a few levels and see where you're at.

I use Audyssey as a starting point and then tweak to suit me and my listening environment. It's a good base starting point.

yeah thats what i done. I cranked up the surround dB a little but i am still not experiencingf what i was before. okay like Iron Man....i was watching that last night ans the level of noise from the rear speakers was low, especially during the scene when he is trying to get away from the f22 raptors. there was little surround effect compared to before.

The Onkyo says multi chan on it which is what i presume to be correct as the ps3 is doing the decoding of the lossless audio, is there any other setting the onkyo should be set to?

You only have the option of Audyssey or Direct with PCM and the 605, so try both of those. It's almost overpowering for me in Iron Man- in fact I need to go back and recalibrate from my change in rear speakers.

Make sure your PS3 has the DRC mode set to off. Night Time mode with PCM isn't a choice so you don't have to worry about that.

What are your levels and crossovers set at currently? Are you sure you're getting the TrueHD track? Make sure you checked with the setup button on the PS3 while the flick is playing.

Dont know if this will help, but after the audyssee eq, I turned my 4 surrounds levels up.

You can also try adjusting the distance.Keep in mind you should not be able to localize the sound effects to the speaker. You should get a feeling of sounds coming from left right and over head etc. The thing that audessy does is set up your sweet spot more than anything.I used too like cranking the surrounds but I really tried give the auto settings a chance and now instead of just hearing sound from the speakers I have good sound field in my listening position where sometimes I swear the sounds are upstairs are outside some times I have to go look outside

I"m using the same receiver and a PS3 and I get plenty of volume out of my surrounds, but I also turned mine up some after running Audyssey.

As someone pointed out before, make sure the DRC setting in your PS3 is set to off. From what I've read, if it's left on auto, Iron Man will trigger it to on.

I would leave the distance settings alone, if they're right already. Tampering with them could mess up the timing of your sound field. It may or may not be noticeable, depending on how much you alter things.

thanks for all the advice.

my crossovers are currently set at 80hz all around, DRC is set to off on the ps3 and i have it set to linear PCM. All of the options are checked apart from AAC in regards to the sound output formats in the ps3. when i press select it shows 2ch pcm.....is that my problem? or is that correct?

That's the problem. 2ch pcm?! It shouldn't be doing that. What movie? Iron Man? There's definitely an issue somewhere. Did you run the Audyssey so that it detected all of your speakers properly? Check that and the test tones to make sure. 2ch means that either the wrong audio is selected/played or the receiver isn't detecting all your speakers.

i ran the test tone, and also ran audyssey it detected all of my speakers. should i unselect te 2ch PCM from the list?

Everything else in the list is greyed out but has a check mark in the box. right now playing back iron man it is showing 2ch.48khz

You shouldn't have to do that, but try it. I have to double-check but I'm 90% sure I don't have that unselected. I just left it on auto and it selected everything for me (except aacs).

I have put all of my speakers to 100Hz on the crossover settings.. I have turned off the audessy equaliser, and i also did not realize that you had to select the true HD audio track when you start watching the movie! sounds very impressive now! I have just taken twister for a test drive and i am very happy indeed!

thanks to everyone for all the help!

Glad you got it worked out. Remember in the future that a lot of blu-rays don't default to the lossless audio track. Whenever you start your movies hit display and make sure it's playing the track you want.

it is pretty crazy that the loss less track does not kick in from the get go, is there a way to make that happen?
