Default PS3 Fan Noise?

I love my PS3 except for one thing, the fan noise. I have had it for a while now and never noticed the fan, until the 1.80 update. The fan goes into its highest speed within 5 minutes of watching a DVD and doesn't slow down until I take the DVD out. I even replaced it for a new one, but as soon as I did a system update it happened again. Should I replace it again? Can anyone help?

Can't say I've noticed a thing. My PS/3 is very quiet, and is on pretty much 24/7.

Mine is louder but doesn't go into the highest speed, but it is higher than the lowest speed. It's slightly louder than my 360 elite now, but you don't notice it at normal volume levels.

If you have the space, stand the PS3 vertically. It really helps the cooling.

Vertical or horizontal and mine reacts exactly the same.

Cool Turn up sound

I seriously never notice the fan, I do keep mine vertically and it seems fine.

Does it matter if you have a stand to place it vertically?

there are 2 types of fans inside the ps3, which one is in yours depends on which factory it came out of. i believe the difference in fans is the reason why some people's ps3's are louder than others, one fan is more efficient than the other and therefore doesn't have to spin as fast to attain the desired system temperature. i attached a picture of each fan below, you can see one fan has 15 blades and the other has 19. i assume the 19 blade fan is the more efficient one.
bottom line is if you have a loud ps3 you just have a loud ps3, and changing its location or orientation likely won't help. its just got a fan that has to work harder to keep the system cool.

I noticed that too with my brother's PS3. It was whisper quiet when we first bought it - sometimes I couldn't tell if it was on! Then, it just got noticeably louder after the update that added scaling. Almost as loud as my was when playing anything disc based. But at least it's not overheating, lol.

The weird thing is that it did not start getting loud until the 1.8 update.

I think a good stand adds a touch of stability (important if you have rugrat grandchildren as we do). I use the inexpensive black "vertical" stand that connects to the PS3 and has nice subtle blue lights which are very attractive. When not watching Blu-ray movies I run folding@home 24/7 on the PS3. I've never had an overheating problem. Considering that the PS3's Cell processor supposedly allows it to process the same amount of "folding" that 20 PCs process in the same time, I find it amazing that it never has a heat problem. And the fan doesn't seem particularly loud. It's just a well built and designed piece of equipment.

Yeah, laid flat, my PS3 would reach the 2nd fan speed regularly in 10-15 minutes into a movie, but couple weekends ago I was watching a dvd set and ~3 hours into it the PS3 kicked into the 3rd fan speed which was finally too loud for me. With the PS3 still running, I placed it on the floor vertically, it shortly dropped back down to the 2nd fan speed.

Last Blu-ray movie I watched with the PS3 vertical, it never even kicked into the 2nd fan speed, stayed at the 1st fan speed the whole time.

The 1.8 update introduces a lot more processing into upscaling dvds, so it naturally will generate more heat. But it's a good thing, the quality improvement is soooo much better.

Default not related to fan but i am having a problem

i know it is not really directed toward fan noise but whenever i plug my PS3 into my t.v. or i plug the AV cables in it makes this loud buzzing noise. it depends on how loud the T.V. is. is it the cables or my t.v.?

Ive had mine for a couple of days. It has not been turned off since it arrived.

When its not folding Im surfng the net and I do not hear an increase in fan noise, barely can hear it.

I also watched a BR movie and two episodes of Alias back to back and have not heard it increase either.

My ps3 is in a well ventilated open ent center.

i heard somewhere that taping up those vents helps with the fan noise. that is by completely destroying the insides of the ps3. not pretty but the fan won't bug you anymore.

I put a massive tower fan in front of my PS3 so that it gets proper cooling (by proper, I mean an obscene amount) Overkill... But yeah, ever since the firmware updates the fan is almost always on.
