Default Does PS3 Charge Controllers (USB) While Off? (Red-Light)

Does the PS3 charge the controller through USB or does the power need to be on?

It is not unplugged, it is sitting with the red light... Thanks in advance!

No. must be operating. Same with iTunes to charge your iPod with a computer (unless you have some kind of charging station)

WELL, that sure as heck does explain a lot for me then as well. I thought it charged while on and off. That explains why whenI go to use the controler, I'd have to re-?????.....match up the controler to the unit. I wil havet o charge the right way tonite. Got an answer without even asking. I love this place.

Silly people, you don't need iTunes to charge an iPod.

Just some Gatorade and an Onion.

Technically, your cable box is running or using more electricity that it should as its USB port is powered up. But at least you're not using the PS3 to charge.

Use the PC, cable box or a USB charger or plug it into the PS3 when you're actually using it.

what difference does it make when you're using? its not like charging the controller is eating up lots of electricity

To clarify, if you're using the PS3, use it to charge your controller.

But if you're not using the PS3, then use a PC, cable box or a USB charger.

That's exactly what I would do. But my PS3 and laptop are not always on. The cable box, even when I turn it "off", is always able to charge. I like the idea of charging it while I sleep without leaving anything on. If the PS3 allowed me to do that while it was "off" (red light instead of green), then I'd have already been doing that.

Does it make a difference using a cable box/laptop? I've noticed that I can charge my controller via my cell phone charger, but I can't charge my cell phone on my PS3 using the original cables for the controller, but I can using my hard drive USB cable on the PS3. Is the PS3 controller cable limited in the voltage that it sends out compared to other USB cables?

Something must be wrong with your iPod, mine charges through USB without iTunes being open all the time.

As for the PS3, yeah it sucks that the PS3 must be on but it doesn't take that long to charge. Do it while you are watching a BD.
