Flashing red light on PS3- Any fix? - Blu-ray Forum

20GB bought at launch. Basically the PS3 shuts itself off.. Yellow for a brief second then to red flashing lights. I waited a bit and was able to get solid blue for a little while and eject the movie but then back to the red lights. I had just played a few games of NBA 09 Inside fine as well.

I've used the hell out of my PS3 (hundreds of movie viewings, tons of gaming, music, slide shows, etc) so I'm not really super surprised but I am bummed that I'll have to wait to play games and watch movies.

i know the yellow light usually means dead hard drive, not sure about a blinking red light tho

I don't think it is hard drive as I waited a bit after unplugging and it did load up fine and let me load up a movie but then cut out again.

I do have a 160GB HDD in it though. Can I just pop that in another PS3 and use all the loaded games, songs, etc? I'm kind of more concerned about that as I have a network that I share PSN downloads with and don't want it to count as another unit.

Sony's site sounds like it is $150 to get a fix..

well do a quick google search and see whats wrong with it first. and i could be wrong, but i dont think you can just swap the drive into another ps3

i think the blinking red light means the ps3 has over heated dude. i think a call to sony may be in order

The exact same thing happen to a buddy of mine and he HAD to send it back to sony for fix

Yeah, that's what I thought from googling. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing some trick or something that could fix it. Thanks for the feedback..

Oh well..

Maybe I'll buy a dedicated blu-ray player as well then soon to put less where on the PS3. If I can find one for under $200 supporting DTS-MA and TrueHD this Holiday that would be nice.

Now the Wii is the only next gen system that hasn't broke for me, haha probably because I rarely touch it.

This happened to me about 2 months ago.

Came home and had no light on the PS3. Flipped the switch in the back to off then back on and got a red light as normal. Turned the unit on and the light goes green, yellow, then flashing red. Is that what yours is doing?

Sorry, but you have to get it repaired. Mine was just out of warranty (less than 2 weeks) and Sony repaired it for free, but otherwise it was $150. Sorry to say but it's most likely dead. When I described the above situation to the tech he didn't have me do any troubleshooting, he jumped straight to "these are your repair options".

I guess I can clean the house or do something more productive, lol..

I've been gaming and watching movies quite a bit more lately as well.. Just started NBA 09 last night. At least I got Iron Man in before it croaked

If you look at this thread you will see that CC has a decent BD player that can bitstream both DTS-HDMA and DTrueHD for $250 with a free copy of the Matrix Trilogy on BD on sale next week. Not a bad deal!

Thanks for the tip.. Hmm, Samsung, I've never been a fan of their players but maybe a "rental" unit to try it out

Hey man sorry about your PS3. I have had this problem with my 60 gig system for a while now. I will get the red lights sometimes if i am using my ps3 for a while then turn it off and then try to turn it back on. I will get the beep the flashing yellow and then the flashing red. What i do to fix it and it might work for you is. I turn it off from the back and unplug it also. I let it sit overnight and then in the morning it will be good to go. After it starts working again i just need to make sure when i use my PS3 i have it turned off for like a half hour before i turn it back on. I hope this works for you and didnt confuse you. If you have nay more questions please ask me.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. It's been unplugged sitting in my car all day so it will be easy to see if it works when I get home.

I just had the same problem... yellow and red blinking light.. called Sony and have to send it in and their gonna send me a replacement for $150

WORST PART IS NO PS3 FOR 3 WEEKS AND I JUST GOT IRON MAN
