Nope. Not overrated at all. I love his style and enjoy all of his movies and have for a long time now. A lot of people I know don't like him. Oh well. There's always common ground somewhere else.

I have been a fan of his since I saw Pulp Fiction. I also love the Kill Bill movies. There is just something about the dialogue that I find appealing, although I will admit there a bit too much dialogue in Death Proof. To each his own I suppose.

As a director Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs was awesome.

As a writer the above mentioned plus From Dusk Till Dawn and Natural Born Killers were awesome movies as well, and I heard True Romance was a good movie too.

I think he's a pretty good writer. Directing is alright. Acting is atrocious, although I loved every minute of his dialogue in Pulp Fiction with Jules and Vincent.

Is he overrated? Yeah, a little bit, but he does have a nice number of actually good films, so some of the hype isn't a bad thing. There are definitely worse writer/directors out there.

I don't really get how the term overrated applies here. his last movie did poor box office, he has no oscars or noms afaik... who is overrating him so much? you shouldn't get bent out of shape by fans on message boards, they can't "over rate" someone, they are just fans.

edit - because otherwise it just sounds like you're saying that a certain artist has too many fans which, well, doesn't actually make sense.

I was going to say something similar. Don't you have to have some sort of box office success to be considered overrated?

I think he has a cult following of fans who happen to like his style of movies. Everyone else just happens to hate him.

Pulp Fiction was grounbreaking! It was one of those few movies that had such great characther development and so many twist and turns. It was amazing! First viewing... The scene where Bruce Willis went to go back for his watch... I was on edge like never before. Riveting!

I didn't like Dogs, but thought Jackie Brown was solid. Kill Bill 1 and 2 were great films in my opinion and were also groundbreaking in their own right, especially Tarantino's version of a Kung Fu flick.

Excited for Basterds!

always controversial, his movies always come together really well. I like him! just wish he would quit the cameo roles
Natural Born Killers was pretty much Totally Re-Written by Oliver Stone, which is why the credits say "based on a story by" QT. "True Romance" he wrote the screenplay but did Not Direct it. (Tony Scott did that one).

*** SORRY -- I just went back and saw that my above info has already been posted. I started to read page 1 and then wrote my reply. ***

TARANTINO - By Jim Smith - http://www.amazon.com/Tarantino-Virg...0003228&sr=1-1 - IF you are a fan of his and want to learn more about his beginnings and style, etc, the above is a very good book and the writing is excellent as well. I'm 75% thru it (at the KILL BILL Vol I section). It goes over his casting choices and why, storylines, use of musical choices, and is just a good read if you Enjoy his Films. It also goes over his acting roles he's done. Plus it has reviews, good & bad, from mostly reputable sources.

Anyway, I Love Pulp Fiction, Great screenplay, and love how the Incredible cast are used in all the different parts of the movie, yet they're all tied in really. True Romance, really enjoy that movie as well, excellent Cast also. Reservoir Dogs: Love that one also, great writing, great performances by the cast, his usual great music, etc. Jackie Brown was okay on 1st view, but after seeing it a few more times, I've grown to really Enjoy that one as well. As for everyone here who doesn't "Get Tarantino", that's fine. Everyone has differing opinions, but when the BLU RAY's for Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 were coming out, I saw Tons of posts on that, so obv. a Lot of people either liked them and/or QT himself.

Deathproof was perfect for what it was supposed to be: an "homage" (look it up - lol) to the cheesy 70's low-budget type movies that you loved to hate, or hated to love. Tell me that Car Chase at the end isn't one of the best all-time in film history! Not THEE Best, but one of the best. And, like the 70's movies it was going for in style, it was done REAL. Yes, Real Girl On Hood of Real Car. No CGI in that sequence. I like also how a lot of his Females are not just the Girlfriend or arm candy for some guy. (The Bride: Kill Bill 1 & 2, Uma's character in Pulp Fiction, Pam Grier: Jackie Brown, Rosanna Arquette: True Romance, the 3 Females in Deathproof). They're strong characters and written as such. Also, if you are a True fan of his, the 2 part season ender to CSI (the real one, from Las Vegas), he did a couple years ago (wrote/directed it) was Incredible. He also did an episode of ER back in the day also that had his usual Atypical directorial style intact.

As for his acting... Well, did I mention I love his directing?! (for the most part).

I love most of his writing, his casting, & choice of music in his films---which is usually used to Enhance a scene.

Tarantino's films are loving tributes to the films he loved growing up. I love the same kind of movies. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea ,but when I watch his movies it feels like they're being made just for me.

I don't think he is overrated as I don't think he is worshiped quite like he use to be after Dogs and Pulp. I think he is good but maybe sometimes too smart for his own good trying to pay homage to the old movies he loved.

That said, I will always watch anything he releases but I will for many others. But nothing that makes me want to rush out to the theatre or buy. I just wait until I can rent and then decide if I was to own it.

What I don't understand, and this applies to many people discussing movies nowadays, is how someone can call something overrated just because they don't like it. That doesn't make it overrated, it just means you dislike something that's popular and/or well liked.

Interesting point. But the best answer to your bewilderment is to know that claiming something is overrated is actually an opinion itself anyway. Because even if you win the argument, those that "overrated" it can claim it is now underrated... The rating a movie (or director) should deserve is opinionated and can always be debated

For example: Paul W.S. Anderson... doesn't make very good quality movies, but makes the most enjoyable movies imo. Others that don't see it that way can call me ignorant all they want but I'll still praise him as a filmmaker.
