Default Hardest Time

I have been having the hardest time trying to calibrate my tv. I always feel that the blacks are too black and the whites to white. Like with Wall-E there are scenes where all there is is white and its completely washed out and other movies where its just so damn dark. I've tried using the calibration things on the Wall-E and T2 disc but they're just so darn tricky and it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas on what I can do?

I'd like to suggest Digital Video Essentials (DVE) or AVIA. A lot of people seem to be happy with these "calibration" videos. They are ~$20-25 and you can find them on Amazon, BestBuy, and the like.

Generally, if your whites are washed out and detail-less, lower your contrast and then take your brightness up a notch or two so you get some detail in the blacks. It wont be as bright but your detail will be MUCH better. It also sounds like you need to change the color temperature. Many sets have too much blue in the whites, trying to make the look 'cleaner' to the viewer but whites in real life are not that blue-ish. Go into the menu system and look for choices like 'cool/warm/natural' etc. and try those.
