Don't know what to say, but my PS3 doesn't seem to be that loud, and I just bought it.
But mine is in a cold basement all the time. Maybe try lowering the temp in the room a little? Either that or say the fan is loud or broken or something and exchange it for another. Since it is that new, they should do that no problem, and then if the new one has that problem, you've done all you can do. Good Luck. |

That's the thing.
Just by reading thru this one topic thread, some don't have the problem, some do, some are just living with it. There has to be an explanation and that is what I am trying to get to the bottom of because I am not one to "just live with it" when I just dumped a 1/2 G on it. There is no settling for less than optimal consumer use from my end. |

I'd say there are 2 options open to you then... well 3 actually.
1) Exchange it for another since it is a new item and see if that one has it. 2) Contact Sony and ask if there is something that can be done. 3) Exchange it for a different Blu-ray system and wait on the gaming console. I am sure the standalone players will be quieter. Good Luck |

Mine sits horizontally in my equipment rack and has a shelf to itself. The rack is a very open design though, almost completely open on 3+ sides so maybe that's whats saving me. Hope you figure it out. |

Thx Alaskan Don.
As I posted, my PS3 is clear of any other interference on all 4 sides. That is not an issue. It has to be the firmware upgrade, a bad fan or bad design. I just need others to confirm what they've been told by Sony or what they believe their problem is. Last edited by mgonzo2u; 07-27-2007 at 07:49 PM. |

I think it's the upgrade. I also noticed the fan noice but before I upgraded I hardly heard it at all.

Thank you for adding to this thread Mulder.
I just got off the phone with Sony Cust Service at (800)345-7669. I explained my situation and received a service request number for the sole purpose of getting my early diagnosed problem on file in case of warranty issues. I prod all of you having any sort of fan noise increase issues to call that Sony number (or another provided to you with your unit) to get on file with your problem. The sooner you advise them about you and your unit, you stand a better chance of getting "free" help. Also, the more they receive negative feedback about this apparent growing issue, the better chance we all have of them trying to resolve it to our satisfaction. |

I think temp had a lot to do with it, I noticed that when I watched movies, that the fan would kick in to where you can hear it at about an hour in, but since I moved it into the basement where it is 10 degrees cooler, I never hear the fan, even when folding for days.

I have mine sitting wide out in the open, and the room is kept at 78F.
Its loud enough to be very distracting in quiet scenes. I think I am out of luck though in trying to return it since I hacked off the UPC code for the 5 free movie offer. Has anyone ever exchanged something like this with a damaged box? |

I am wondering if your room temp is a problem, I keep my room at 74 and I really don't have a fan issue. Also I have mine vertically mounted. Mine is one of the first so maybe they put a better fan in, I don't know. I just talked to a buddy and he says the same thing, loud fan, I am sure glad I lucked out after reading these posts though. Too bad.

Do you guys not watch movies with volume? Some of them silent movies? I have NEVER heard my PS3. I don't understand how you could if you are watching something on the damn TV.

I will ask nicely again to please save the juvenile responses about this real issue.
I have a HT system that will get me arrested anytime I choose to, but sometimes I choose not to use it and just use my 1bit Sony TV speakers which are plenty loud on their own (better than any other TV speakers I have ever personally heard). When watching a movie and the dialougue is low, the PS3 fan noise is indeed louder than the actaul dialogue. So with that said, I should say repeated, do you care to share any fixes for this real issue? Last edited by mgonzo2u; 07-27-2007 at 11:22 PM. |

Maybe its the fact I am partially deaf, or the fact that our house has constant noise? Maybe it is also the due to the PS3 being in a cubby hole next to the fire place that dampens the fan? I don't know.
All I know is I have never heard the fan except for once when it was sitting 1 foot from me on the table hooked up to my pc monitor on the first day I got it. Other than that, I do not hear it. Is yours out in the open? Is it sitting somewhere that exacerbates the sound even more? Got any pics of its placement? Is your house quiet all the time? Not really sure how anyone can hear the fan with a movie going, let alone silently. These are not jokes - I am dead serious. |

So I contacted Best Buy Customer Service and they said I could exchange it as long as its within the 30 days.
The issue as I posted above is that I sent in the UPC code and inadvertently the serial number with the rebate form for the 5 free blu-ray movies. So now that I have an email from Best Buy saying its not an issue I am going to head to Best Buy and try to exchange it tomorrow. I will post results once its done. Incidently, I've lowered the room temp to 76F, its wide open and I've even pointed a fan at it. It steps up to the highest fan level when watching normal dvd, but will back down when I get to the XMB after watching a movie. It does the same with blu-ray. I've got a decent system - not an HTIB - and since it was for me a blu ray player that happens to be able to play Madden - its just too loud. I've been at friends houses and theirs dont do this. |

There are two types of fans used in the production runs. One is less efficient and must turn at a higher RPM. This makes it louder. You have a more efficienct fan in your unit apparently. The noise started appearing w'1.8 FW. The big problem is going to be years from now. The louder fans are likely doing more work than originally designed and are at their upper limit. |
