I just met Gary Sherman at a screening of Death Line at the Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY. I told him how much I love Dead & Buried and he said they just discovered the negative for the film and Blue Underground will be doing a brand new Blu-ray that will include a DVD copy and the soundtrack on CD! I cannot be more excited for this news!

No shit. Well boys, you're welcome. I just picked up the existing Blu a couple weeks ago.

I just did, too. Thankfully it was purchased used and for a good price.

Dead & Buried is a damn good film, and a remaster would be much appreciated. One of the first Blu-rays I ever bought.

I knew BU was re-releasing Dead & Buried but I somehow missed the part about them finding the negative - I couldn't be happier. Now how about a street date?

Is it worth picking up the 2009 Blue Underground release of this or is an upgrade imminent? Seems that way by the recent discussion, but a decent amount of time has since passed since said discussion, and still nothing. Thoughts?

Depends on your patience level and tolerance for double dipping I guess. I doubt it will be released within the next few months but I wouldn't be surprised if we saw it sometime this year.

I'll be waiting myself. I don't love the movie, but like it in an underrated horror movie kind of way. But from most accounts the transfer is nothing special. Continually waiting on a Vice Squad announcement as well.

Visited my old Anchor Bay dvd-Vice Squad a couple of months ago. Does not hold up like Dead & Buried imo...

I would wait. According to the director Gary Sherman, the bluray was supposed to be out late last year around December but due to some scheduling conflicts (special features most likely) he said that it would probably be out mid '18. He seemed really happy with the restoration so by the sounds of it this would be a special edition worth waiting for.

I respectfully and strongly disagree. Saw Vice Squad a couple years ago on the big screen and it absolutely destroyed the audience. Awesome flick. I'd say it's Gary Sherman's best overall and definitely the greatest moment in Wings Hauser's illustrious and storied career.

“Welcome to Potters Bluff.” Some exciting news that was seemingly lost in the shuffle last Summer – Blue Underground are giving Gary Sherman’s essential DEAD AND BURIED (1981) a Blu redo later this year, sourcing a fresh 4K scan of the original negative with restoration and color timing supervised by the director and DP Steve Poster!

In the New England coastal community of Potters Bluff, Sheriff Dan Gillis (James Farentino) finds his caseload overflowing when visitors and passers-through start showing up hacked, sliced and burned to bits. With the help of local mortician Dobbs (the sublime Jack Albertson), Dan tries to solve the murders, but this small town hides more secrets than he may care to find out. With a great supporting cast of familiar faces (Melody Anderson; Lisa Blount; Robert Englund; Michael Pataki) and several gruesome Stan Winston FX showstoppers, DEAD AND BURIED is an enthralling, intelligent thriller that gleefully keeps you guessing until it reaches its incredible denouement. Simply put, it’s Grade A moviemaking and must-see cinema.

Blue Underground have previously released the film on special edition DVD and Blu-Ray, hosting a slew of commentaries and featurettes, but Sherman is hard at work on even more supplements, swearing they “will blow people away!” He’s also confirmed that composer Joe Renzetti is supervising a new audio remix and preparing the soundtrack for inclusion as a bonus CD.

Though Sherman spoke about the restoration as far back as last June while hosting a Drafthouse screening—even going on record shortly thereafter for an episode of the Shock Waves podcast—word never quite spread the way it should, and the overhaul got subsequently delayed due to a malfunctioning scanner. Thankfully, the director spoke up a few days ago, indicating the release is now tentatively slated for September. Obviously, it’s to be treated as “Rumor Mill” material until an official announcement is made, but it’s clear this classic will indeed be getting an essential upgrade in the near future. Watch this space for more details!

In the US, yes, Blue Underground still hold the rights to it and are releasing a brand new bluray from a new 4K scan with lots of extras later this year. I'm not sure who owns the rights in the UK though so they may have a chance to release it there some time in the future.

Not yet. I'm guessing Maniac and Zombie got in the way of Dead & Buried.
