Default Full HD content vs. upscaled DVD content on an HD Ready 1024x768 screen

Hi.

I'm a new guy here so I'd like to greet all of you in this community.

OK,now for the question: I'm considering buying my first Blu-Ray player and I was just wondering how much better can a 1080p picture from a BD look than my upscaled DVDs I'm using now? They are upscaled to 1080p and the screen is 1024x768. They look beautiful, but is it a wise decision to buy a Blu-Ray player for my 42'' screen?

Hello and Welcome. I have a 42" LCD and personally I can see a BIG difference from Blu-ray to upscaled DVD. I would say yes, it's definitely worth getting Blu-ray. Also, you have to consider you're getting HD audio, on most BD's anyway, when you go Blu. The prices on players or dropping and the selection of movies is getting bigger. Also, when you get a new Blu-ray player it will upconvert your old DVD's as well.

Your posting this question on a website called blu-ray.com, so prepare for the avalanche...

In all seriousness, go with the Blu-Ray. I had an upconvert dvd player and have gotten a blu-ray in the last couple of months...it is a very noticeable jump between the two. Additionally, the blu-ray has a lot of additional content and killer audio...I'd definitely say go for the blu-ray!

THX guys,I just thought it wouldn't be such a difference because of the 1024x768 resolution. And I forgot the audio part.

There are many people on here who love the 768 resolution and would tell you there is a tremendous difference.

A few things......

I think the term "Full-HD" is marketing fodder, and as far as upscaling your DVDs to 1080p, that's not really happening..... The player can "Guess" what the missing lines of resolution/info should be, but you need a blu-ray or HD DVD to actually CONTAIN the information on the source material to accurately reproduce 1080 lines of resolution (whether it be 'I' or 'P' )

You will notice a large increase in PQ with a blu-ray player, and of course the audio is much better as well.

I highly recommend it.

I can upconvert my DVDs, yet I still re-purchase them on Blu-ray.... trust me, if it weren't a huge difference, I'd save my money, but it looks/sounds SOO much better!!!!!!

The improvement is enough for me to replace my SD DVDs with Blu-rays for the movies I like to watch more than once.

Yes,but are you doing that on a Full HD screen or you have an HD Ready like I do?
If I would have a 1080 screen I would run to the store and buy my new player. But since my resolution is 1024x768 I posted this question to see if there is a visible difference.

It's a 1080i/720p capable, so probably a LESSER resolution than your set..... There is a larger difference in 480p DVD (via HDMI/Component whatever) and 720p/1080i blu-ray than there is between 720p and 1080p

You WILL notice a large difference.

DolbyBlue agrees with you that picture is better on an HD Ready display,he even says he found the picture on a CRT better.

Thanks to all of you.

No problem..... make sure to not buy expensive HDMI cables when you get your blu-ray player, and check out some reviews to make your first movie experiences on blu-ray as eye opening as possible.

There is still a difference, I would upgrade to blu ray regardless as sonner or later you'll want to upgrade you're tv and you'll be glad you had already started buying blu rays over dvd's.

if you are upscaling to 1080p, then feeding a 768p screen you are running the signal through 2 sclaing operations= up to 1080p and then your screen knocks it back to 768p and will degrade the picture. if you want to upscale you must feed the screen as close to it's native resolution (768) as possible, because your screen will always display its native resolution.

Honestly, you won't see a difference.

Your screen resolution is only 1024x768?? Bluray is 1920x1080 resolution. Your screen won't give you all the benefits of bluray. Your only benefit will be bluray exclusive bonus features and a little bit better color.

bluray is 1080p, your screen is 768p. Save your money and upscale.

UNLESS... you plan to get a better monitor soon, then just go ahead and get a bluray player. However, many places offer nice packages on bluray players when you buy a new 1080p television...

I will say that waiting would be a lot cheaper on your part, especially since you WON'T get the benefits of Bluray right now.

If you wait until you get a new monitor, players will be significantly cheaper and movies will go down in price also! With only a 768p res monitor, you can definately afford to wait.

Complete hogwash and misinformation. Why do we still allow this kind of garbage to be posted around here? There is a HUGE difference between upscaled DVD and 1080p displayed on a 768p set. Where do you get your information?

To the OP: This kind of response, from a small minority of misinformed 1080p snobs around here, is just FUD (I'm sure doby will be by shortly to back this up). There is more to your picture quality than simply resolution. Color reproduction, black level (ANSI contrast) and motion resolution are all more important to picture quality than resolution. Resolution is also only as good as the display size and viewing distance. Put a 42" 720p and 1080p set next to each other, feed them the same 1080p signal, and I defy anyone to tell me which was which from 15' away (assuming the same brand and similar specs other than resolution). If resolution was SO important, then why did a 768p set beat 6 other 1080p sets in the shootout below?

http://hometheatermag.com/lcds/208hdface/

One last thing to note: You will only be able to take advantage of HD audio if you have and AVR that accepts audio over HDMI (or 5.1/7.1 analog in).
