hey guys, im brand new to this forum and just had a question before i spend up to 600$ on a blu ray player. Im looking to get either the samsung bd-p1200 or the pasonic DMP-BD10Ak, however i know that BD-J 1.1 and BD-J 2.0 are coming fairly soon. I've read many things about how the sammy, with firmware upgrades, could play the movie on br-j 1.1/2.0 but just not the extra features, so i guess the pasonic can do the same. But what about Java scene selection, or maybe i couldn't even play a movie because of a future advanced java start menu?
so i guess to sum that all up... will either players ever become so obsolete that they cannot play future blu ray movies?! (i dont care about extra features, and i also apologive in advance if this subject has been touched on before) |

That said, all movies will (or *should*!) play fine on the older players (there'd be hell to pay if that wasn't the case!). It's the extra features that take advantage of Profile {1.1, 2.0}, which you're not interested in. Oh, and the ability to directly download firmware updates. Odds are the PS3 will be upgradable to Profile 1.1 or even 2.0 via a firmware update, so that might be your best route (other than waiting for a player to be introduced after October 31st). |

Whether or not it is truly upgradable to 1.1 still has yet to be seen, but everything I have read seems to indicate it may. Its hard to tell if the stuff I've read though is just people being hopeful or simple facts. |

and the BDA(Blu-ray Disc Association) has made it so every player released so far wit be at bare minimum be able to play blu-ray movies, current player will probly have to load for like 2 minutes to play movies that are made in 2-3 years time. your saffest bet is the ps3 |

can anyone here who owns a ps3 and a standalone provide us with some incite on the PQ differences?
also, does anyone know if the bd-2400 sammy, coming out in october, is profile 1.1? it looks good and i probably get that if it has 1.1 Last edited by madmax141; 08-09-2007 at 12:20 AM. |

1.1 is only important if you want the extra features. Not important to me, but it's a personal choice. As regards the PQ question, I have both a PS3 and a Sammy 1200. PQ on the 1200 is a bit better and the SD DVD upscaling superb. Much depends on your screen size. If you're watching on a 40-50" display, the differences in PQ may not be that noticeable. |

Actually, there are some picture quality issues with the PS3 when it comes to Blu-Ray and DVD, but it's nothing major. It just doesn't display blacker than black, which really isn't THAT nessisary. You're not supposed to have the brightness up high enough to see it anyway.

Is there anyting from Sony that confirms they will update the PS3 to profile 1.1 or 2.0? It should be capable of it but it would be nice to know for sure.

I'm pretty sure Sony considers the PS3 their flagship Blu-Ray product. They're also hoping to have it around for close to 10 years if possible. As such, I'm not really worried about it getting updated to Profile 1.1 or 2.0. It was built to be capable of the complete 2.0 specs; it wasn't just a happy coincidence. I think it's simply a question of when, not if, it gets updated. Chances are it won't be long after October 31st that Sony rolls out a firmware update to Profile 1.1 (maybe putting out some movies that actually use the advanced features along side it).
