Where Did This Popping Noise Come From?? - Blu-ray Forum

I was celebrating the relocation of my components with a viewing of the beautiful new King Kong blu-ray. My ear is pretty attentive and I was almost positive I heard a few quick static pops in my front speakers!! The next evening I was watching something on Tivo and there it was again only more obvious. On top of that, every time I turn the volume up on my Onkyo I hear a little clicking sound with each increase/decrease of the setting. These problems are new to my system and I have never dealt with such things before. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Some quick info on the new setup, I have my audio rack roughly 45 feet (along the walls) away from the TV. Everything is going through the Onkyo and coming out via 45 foot blue jeans HDMI cable to the XBR4. My Emotiva remained in my TV stand and I have those connected via Onkyo pre-outs and 50 foot Monoprice Digital Coaxial Audio Cable. Images can be found in my gallery for a better idea, if needed.

Didn't the Onkyo 805 come complete with the DTS-HD/MA Bomb bug? If you do not have the latest firmware (for the receiver)- you might be experiencing the DTS Bomb.

Didn't they fix that with a firmware upgrade?

Yes they did (its ref'd in my original post) but if the OP has not applied the firmware update to his receiver - its still broken.

I've had my Onkyo up and running bomb free for well over a year. I don't believe I have the latest firmware but I would be surprised if the unit suddenly developed the problem.

could be either a ground loop, or your speaker wiring is loose/faulty?

It doesn't sound like the bomb because the OP said he heard it using his Tivo too.
To be sure the OP can check his DSP firmware.

They should be like this to be bomb free.

SR8053...07820B

Press Display + Standby then arrow to the right to look what version you have.

I'll check out the firmware tonight. All of the connections are very solid. I've put in about 5 hours of viewing since this post and everything is crisp, clean, and pop free. With a little luck it was just a one day event but that kind of luck is pretty rare. I'll report back.

didnt you happen to upgrade your power conditioner if im not mistaken? (big fan btw of your system)

1. check your current connections on your components, turn it up again and lets see the results.

2. try plugging your receiver into a different er.. socket, and see if theres any difference.

3. still the same? hmm. lets try to isolate it and see if it MIGHT (just might) happen to be the apc unit you got. try messing around with moving the panamax back into play, and see if you're still getting it.

on a quick side note, i hope its not your current amp/onkyo clipping. it shouldnt at this point.

I've been keeping a close eye on the system all week and it appears to be gone. At this point my best guess is that the popping came from the HD broadcast I was watching. I was almost positive I heard it during a blu-ray movie but I can't recreate the popping so, for now, the book is closed on this issue.
