I did a quick search and didn't see anything about this. My question is about Blu ray compatibility with Apple products. I'm considering getting an iMac but if they're gonna start putting Blu Ray drives in them I'll hold off a while longer. Has anyone heard any plans of something to this extent? If not are there any external Blu Ray drives or something like that? Sorry if this has been mentioned somewhere before.

Can his decision be reversed due to an 'unfit state of mind'? It is obvious he is the only one who thinks this way and considering his health...he is not in the best place to make this choice IMO.

thanks for all the info everyone. I thought I had heard a while back Apple was gonna support Blu Ray. It made more sense when I heard it because the format war was still going on and I guess it's just one jab Apple could have taken at Microsoft.
I'd still like to get an iMac soon, it just would have been cool to pop in a BD in my room if my roommates are watching something I'm not into downstairs on the PS3 |

You would think with Jobs being the main dude at Disney and Pixar he would push for the BD.

I wouldn't mind it built in on my Mac Pro for authoring (using Adobe Encore (part of the Premiere Pro). Final Cut Studio could do with BD support that is all I ask) but any 3rd party BD burner works so I see no reason why people can't buy a cheap 3rd party on like I did (although $300 isn't really cheap ![]() Last edited by MacLover; 02-18-2009 at 11:27 AM. Reason: IDK what happened but Final Cut part was missing |

http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/about/...Companies.html Therefore, Apple Inc. will eventually begin bluray playback functionality i'm sure... just in time. Don't forget who you're talking about here, this is a 1-2 project at a time company. Nothing gets done without Jobs' first hand approval. And since he's been so busy with the iphone and stupid macbook air, he hasn't been able to green-light 3rd or 1st party software to playback bluray on their precious OSX. Maybe next year guys! It's been officially announced that it will not be soon, with the Snow Leopard coming out, it will not have bluray playback... nor any other updates to user functionality (it's bug updates, decluttering of the system, removing powerpc support and incorporating cocoa for developers, basically. they have said there will be no NEW features for customers other than the Dock folder view update thingy - can't remember the title) |

I've owned this MacBook for a little under a month and have already done this process 6 times now. I wanted to try Windows 7, but the first time I couldn't get the drivers to load (Apple only wants the Pro models to run x64 versions of Windows, but there are ways around this... ![]() Stacks. |

![]() If Apple really wants to take over the computer industry, and gain a LEAD on Microsoft, they're gonna have to release a PC version of OSX. THAT is the announcement i'm waiting for, and frankly, the only thing that would actually impress me anymore. I would absolutely BUY it day 1, and dual boot it with Windows 7. Instead of virtualizing it (which i've done, and it's blah without FULL gpu, ram and processor allocating support) Anyway, what was the topic about again? ![]() |

![]() 1) PC Version of OSX? Maybe you need to understand what "Macintosh" really means. Macintosh is an experience and it is a complete packaged product. It is not just an OS. I left the PC world for this very reason - I don't want an OSX "PC" version, no thank you. I want a Macintosh. I want something that is brilliantly designed from a human factors and an engineering standpoint. You will not see a PC version of OSX. Why don't you just continue to support Windows, and quit posting in these Apple threads, because you have nothing really to add but to ease in your Windows support. It's getting really old, and it's the reason why the last thread was closed. If you want an Apple, then buy an Apple. Quit trotting around and sticking your foot in the water. Have you ever figured that Apple maybe doesn't "want" to go mainstream? Mainstream is creates a decline in quality. I'm happy where Apple is, as they are currently on a small, but steady incline of gaining market share. 2) Telling people to not "expect" exciting things from Apple just because Jobs is on sick leave? You do realize that Steve doesn't design apple products, right? We will see just as much exciting things with him gone than with him around. 3) Do you have proof that Blu-ray playback will not be supported with Snow Leopard? I can answer 3. the Dev. Snow Leopard shows not signs of support for BD, it may be an added feature at a later date although I doubt it for a bit.
Snow Leopard is just a clean up of the foundation and giving it securty fixes and what not, Apple has said that they will not have any major update and it is all a clean up. |

OSX runs great on PC's already. using virtualization software, or "patching" the kernel. you just don't have full hardware support because of the OS's capabilites on it. If Apple decided to open up HARDWARE support, they'd still be as good of an OS, but just run on more affordable hardware. The "experience" is because they have a select amount of hardware that is compatable with the OS, so support is minor but the hardware is MADE FOR THE OS. The bad thing about it though, is cost! Apple computers are more expensive, no argument about it. Because the hardware had to be specially made for the OS. If the hardware wasn't OS peripheral, Apple computers could be 3-400 dollars cheaper! and compete with PC sales. When did Jobs say he doesn't want Apple to go mainstream???? that's rediculous. a business that doesn't grow - dies. Maybe Apple should start selling LESS iPods then, because they have the largest percentage of the market share in mp3 players... and why would they want that?! (sarcasm) 2)Nothing happens without Jobs' approval. I'm not saying that nothing exciting will happen... i'm just saying it won't be anything too MAJOR. 3) YES! go google any article about snow leopard... they'll all say, they're just bug fixes and an OS cleanup of old code, powerPC support will be deleted, hard drive space will be saved, cocoa will be integrated for developers, and the addition to "stacks" for the dock. That's pretty much it. No NEW features... though, Apple could release it in another form though (new Apple brand bluray drive, new movie player, Quicktime update possibly). go do some reading now...
