Default Connecting Component Cables

A friend of mine just got some new component cables for a really cheap price and gave one to me. I currently have a DVD Player positioned under my Blu-ray player on my TV stand. The Blu-ray player is connected with HDMI, but my old DVD player is only connected with composite cables(red, white, and yellow). I would like to use the new cable on the DVD Player but have never used component cables before. Do I connect both the composite cable and the component cable to the DVD Player and TV? Yellow on composite is video right? Do I need that plugged in if I add the component cables?

Component video cables are Red, Green, Blue and do not have audio attached to them. Your DVD player should have red, green, blue outputs if is supports Component out, for the audio you could use the red/white RCA for audio or use optical (preferred) as RCA will not give you Dolby Digital or 5.1. You did not mention if you were using a receiver and I am guessing you do not use a PS3 for your Blu-Ray player. Yellow is the Video on RCA cables and you do not use it with Component.

In other words. The component cables (Red/Green/Blue) replace your yellow composite cable.

Thanks for the help guys. I thought yellow was video and I guess I don't need it now. Just curious, what would happen if I plugged in the composite yellow video connector and had the component cables connected at the same time?

You'd be able to select one or the other as the input source on your tv/receiver. The two cables wouldn't compete with each other.

Is there any particular reason that you would like to continue to use your old dvd player? Why not just use the Blu Ray player for SD DVD content?
