I'm trying to find out the best placements for my 5.1 surround speakers. I have some photos on my ht tab for a reference. I have tv stand on my front wall with subwoofer on top, and one front speaker just to the left of the stand, while my other front speaker is to right of my desk. My center speaker is on the top shelf, above my PS3 in between the two game boxes. I also have both rear speakers on the back left and right wall, on opposite sides of my bed. But I don't get the effect of surround sound. What are the best placements to get the surround effect? Also, any rearranging tips/advice/feedback about my setup is welcome.

very complicated room I might say, but workable. I guessing it's a bedroom? Is there no chance you can rearange the whole room and put the tv front and center from where you'll be viewing from? If the answer is a definate 'no', then maybe you could move the left speaker to the left side of the window, and the right to the immediate right on the bookcase. Biggest problem is getting them calibrated right, and without me searching for info on your speaker/receiver system, I'm going to guess that it's not going to give you many options for frequency adjustments or delays. If delay is out of the question, the best thing for you to do is get out the ole tape measure, and try and get every speaker the same distance from where your going to be sitting/laying for movie time.

The quickest solution would be to swap positions for the component rack (I think I have the exact same rack in my game room) and the TV Stand. I would put the center on top of the TV Stand and Fronts on the computer table & component rack. The sub should be on the ground. Never put the sub on anything (except something to isolate it from the floor - like a subdude).
Also, do you have them calibrated w/ a sound meter? The surround effect will be much greater with the speakers level matched. |

See if it has test tones and if you can adjust the speaker levels. You may not be able to with this system. The limits of this surround system may also be why you can't really get the full surround effect from it.
If you can upgrade at some point there are some decent price speaker sets and AVRs that won't be too expensive. I recently setup a system for my in-laws that cost $350. I got them the Boston Acoustic MCS-100 & the Onkyo TX-SR304 AVR. It sounds really good in their living room. You can still improve on your current system with better placement. |
