Default 7.1 speaker placement?

hey, just wondering if there is a recommended height or place for the rear 7.1 speakers that go behind the seating position? should they be as equal height as the surrounds? or higher? not sure but i will be hooking up my system setup next week for this, i have 5.1 now.

Ideally you would want the speakers tweeters to be ear level. Also, they should not be spread as far apart as the surround speakers. This chart should be helpful, though the location of the subwoofer could probably be improved in the diagram.

The front speakers should be placed between 6 to 10 feet apart so that the height of the tweeters is approximately the same level as your ears when you are sitting down. The surround speakers should be above your head to the side and rear. It is better to keep their heights approximately the same, but we all have to make compromises because we don't live in a theater.

Check the Calibrating Your Audio With an SPL Meter and A Guide to Bipolar, Dipolar, & Direct Surround Speakers. There are helpful diagrams in the middle of post #1 in both threads.

cool thanks. my setup has CSW s300 surrounds and rear channels. they are half moon shaped and mount on the walls. my surrounds are even with my sitting position on each side wall. they are about 2-3 ft higher than my ears wehn sitting.

should i mount the rear channels at the same height behind where i sit?, of coarse measured and even.

crazy, have you ever tried spacing out your rear surrounds more?...a little closer to the edge of the couch?

I'm just curious, I don't run 7.1 so I am in no way criticizing

As are mine (pics in my gallery below, under the "FXi3" pics) All Four (side/rear) Surrounds are at the same level from the ceiling; Standing up, they're at ear level but sitting down they're 2-3' higher from ear level.

Wall treatment?? Refrigerator treatment..

Don't get me wrong your set up I'm sure sounds sweet, but most of us do not balance a coffee maker and a fridge in our HT.

Huh? I don't get it?
What does that have to do with speaker placement?

There's nothing wrong with his wall treatment (well, maybe he could use more...), but he's made the most of his space and has one of the best non-dedicated set-ups on the forum. For that matter, his set-up probably surpasses some dedicated rooms.

How far to put the back surrounds apart in a 7.1 setup? How far to put them behind listener?
