Default Looking for that last piece

I have been on the upgrade trail for a couple of months and am down to the last piece that I need, the sub. I currently have an old 150W JBL 10" sub that came with a JBL SCS150 HTIB. I am fairly clueless on what makes a good sub or not. Here are my specifics...

4809 cubic foot room.
80% Blueray/DVD Home Theater
20% Music
Sony DG820 receiver
Fronts Energy 2XC-300 towers
Center Energy C-C100
Surrounds Energy 2XC-100
Rear Surr Energy 2XC-100
Primary seating position about mid room
Budget would like to keep it under $300 but not in cement.

Suggestions from those that know would be appreciated

have you seen the Acoustic Audio thread? I would recommend a 12" front firing sub, and if you like, you could still use your 10" sub as a secondary elsewhere in the room.

I second the PA-120, or for $50 more than your budget you could get the beast!(the ed a2-300)

the ED is becoming the 'norm' for HT owners, I just don't like the wait time. I need stuff fast!

Well for me the waiting wasn't bad " good things come to those that wait". But the sheer size of that thing, and it was a little more than the misses would allow.

The beast is my next sub purchase (which hopefully will be soon). Aside from the waiting period, the A2-300 just sounds so darn awesome, that I feel like I am missing out on something.....like I did before I upgraded by speakers....the ugly head of upgraditis is staring right at me ...uughh

What advantages does the ED A2-300 have over the PA 120 or AA Sub 12? Also I guess I should have added in my original post that I do not listen to overly loud levels and am interested in as clean and accurate a bass response as I can get for dollar. I really do not like boomy bass.

Thanks for the responses.

If you don't feel like waiting for the eD... I guarantee that you will be happy with something from HSU Research.

Louder, cleaner, deeper bass. Read the first two posts of the A2-300 thread here. Look at those charts in the second post as well.

First off welcome to the site.

With your budget, I think as some have said the eD A2-300($350) is prolly the top of the hill sub, and the sub to get. I would think that it will have enought to fill your room well. Just keep in mind, that it is sorta large, but well worth it. It seems you have a decent size room so its size shouldn't matter too much for you.

Other the other had, you could get 2 Acoustic Audio 10" subs for $158 each shipped. These are not boomy subs and Big Daddy (Moderator) measured it with his SPL Meter and they do get down to 20hz.

Those would be the 2 things I would consider. Good luck.

I'd agree with deeper, anyway.

Keep in mind that the A2-300 is getting ready to go up in price so either get it now or up your budget if you want one. Personally, at where they're going to be pricing it I'd look at Hsu and SVS a lot harder. I realize they have to make their profits, but I can't help but think it might be a bad move for them to increase their prices. At least they've let everyone know they'll be doing so.

For under $300 I have to say the PA-120 or the BIC VK12 (I think that's the model #).

4809 Cubic feet? What are the actual room dimensions you're working with?

Dear lord, this room might be huge - if we use standard ceiling heights of 8'-0", then it is 20'-0" x 30'-0" x 8-0"!!

Let's hope it has 10'-0" or 12'-0" ceilings - heaven forbid there's vaults in there, I'm not calculating THAT.

20'-0" x 24'-0" x 10'-0"?!?! This is a big room - I'd suggest multiple subwoofers. $300? Get a pair of AA HD-Sub10s.

Are two smaller subs more efficient than one larger?

I am sure that someone here will be able to assist you, but as a general comment, basically square rooms are not optimal for a home theater.

I appreciate that, but you may well benefit from some acoustic treatments and tweaks.
