Chronicles of Riddick & Pitch Black [Blu-ray] Playback Problems - Blu-ray Forum

Anyone know if the problems with these specific Blu-Rays have been fixed?

Seems like they are freezing up for almost everyone, It might work on my PS3 but I wont take the risk.

If I remember correctly, there was a problem with a good number of the original release "Chronicles of Riddick" discs, where they would freeze about 14 minutes into the movie. But most people were able to correct it by returning and getting another copy. I haven't heard much about it since the original release, so I think it would be safe to get them now.

I've been holding off from getting this release for that exact same reason. If reports of bad discs have subsided, then I would risc getting these. At any rate, if I buy from Amazon they will replace my disc if it's defective, right?

I bought mine at BB and they both play just fine on my PS3. No problems whatsoever.

I only have the solo version of Pitch Black, it plays smoothly and zero problem on my computer

No problems for me on either and I am using the aged BDP S1. As long as the updates are up to date I have had no problems with any disc.

I just finished watching "The Chronicles Of Riddick" and had an issue at the 14 minute mark as well. Unfortunatelly I bought this on Tower.com. The other thing I noticed was that there is french wording on the cover of the two copies (Pitch Black as well). What do you guys suggest I do?

Watched both films over the weekend and had zero playback issues. I am in the UK though and we may not have had the dud discs.

First one is the main thread on the subject.

Both worked fine for me but some do have issues with it. The last time I looked, there wasn't any consensus on what players are fine and which ones aren't. It seemed pretty random, working on some players and not working on others.

This is not a player incompatibility or firmware problem. There are simply some bad discs out there. People with problems have exchanged their discs and had the new copies work perfectly, playing in the exact same hardware with the same firmware version.

Whatever manufacturing facility Universal is using appears to have some QC problems. Random distributions of Universal BD discs have repeatable freezing problems - including Chronicles of Riddick, Serenity, Hellboy II, Death Race, and possibly others. No player or firmware issues have ever been found to be linked to these freezing discs - all problems were resolved simply by the user exchanging the disc for a working copy. This problem is not extremely widespread as many people are fine with their first disc, and the few unlucky people are normally able to exchange for a working copy without any difficulty. But all the same, hopefully it will stop and Universal releases will become as consistent in terms of QC as those issued by Sony, Fox, Disney, etc.

I certainly hope there are not issues like this with the upcoming Universal release of Battlestar Galactica - The Complete Series on Blu-ray. Exchanging a 1 or 2-disc release is one thing - attempting to get a perfect 20-disc set with bad discs out in the wild is not something I'd look forward to.

Bringing up an old thread but I just got a copy of Chronicles in the mail from an Amazon 3rd party and it freezes about 15 min into movie. Cant get other chapters to work either. Im going to try and get an exchange

My twinpack from Amazon just arrived and yep, Chronicles of Riddick freezes up at the 14 minute mark and then skips ahead to about the 18 minute mark. Apparently, there are still bad batches in circulation.

I'll contact Amazon and see if I can get a replacement.

Any idea if there were also issues with Pitch Black? Because if so, I'd better check that one as well and get the entire pack replaced.

I have heard of no peoblems with PB.

Both my Chronicles and Pitch Black discs had a freezing problem. I waited for my player's latest firmware update and now I have no problem with either movie. Have watched both of them twice and no freezes.
