Default DLP and Blu-ray question

I have a Samsung 61 inch 1080p rear projection tv that I bought arund 3 years ago and I am thinking of getting a Blu Ray player to replace my up dvd player which is a Samsung also. My question is will there be a big enough difference between the dvd and Blu Ray player to justify getting a player and the extra that I will be paying for the Blu Ray discs? My parents just bought a Samsung LED LCD and I can tell that theirs is sharper but its also a lcd where mine is a dlp. Minus the sharpness of the picture will I be able to see any of the high def upgrades? This may be one of those personal preferences kind of questions but I just needed some opionions. Thanks for any input you might have.

In most cases...... absolutely. Every movie transfer is different, and some are certainly better than others. I've seen some blu-ray releases that barely looked better than upscaled DVD.... and some that have blown me away with their picture quality. But yes.... with a 1080P screen that size... you should certainly notice a difference in almost every case.

If you have a nice audio system though..... IMO that is where blu-ray really shines. Lossless high definition audio makes me cry happy tears.

With my 2nd generation LED DLP 61" Samsung I see major differences. The larger the TV is the more you will notice the difference. Granted it may not be as sharp or clear as what your parents are seeing on their LCD but you will see a major difference between dvd and blu-ray.

although do keep in mind that there are varying amount of differences.
My original star trek DVD vs blu-ray has a huge amount of difference.
My orginal Matrix DVD vs blu-ray has noticeable differences but because the DVD was a very good and higher quality than my star trex dvd the difference between the dvd vs blu-ray for the Matrix is there but just not to the same degree as you would see with an inferior DVD comparison.

I think that Blu Ray is a must for large DLP screens. Since the picture isn't as sharp as an LCD or Plasma, I think that it really benefits it to have a true 1080p source. They look and sound a lot better than upconverted DVD's through the PS3.

Your post calls for a lot of subjective opinions. Only you can decide if there is "a big enough difference between the dvd and Blu Ray player to justify getting a player and the extra that I will be paying for the Blu Ray discs?"

With that being said, I had a 4 year old 46" Samsung DLP. It looked great with HD broadcasts and video games, but I was not overly impressed with its picture-quality for some Blu-ray titles. In fact, there were some titles that looked like upscaled DVD rather than 1080p Blu-ray. Not all, mind you, but some. As an example, I remember reading how impressive the PQ was for Resident Evil: Extinction. I bought the Blu was immediately let down - I felt like I was watching a DVD. This was not a downfall of the disc or the format - it was a downfall of my TV. However, other titles like Troy and The Dark Knight looked phenomenal even on my Samsung DLP. But there was so much inconsistency that I eventually bought a new Sony 52" LCD.

I can't speak specifically to your particular model (since you didn't leave us with the model number ), but I think you would see some improvement over the upconverted DVD. Not to mention the ever-important (but often overlooked) audio improvement. But speaking from experience, I saw my greatest improvement when I switched from the DLP to LCD. I realize this might not be an option for you at this time, but maybe you can purchase a Blu-ray player and give it a test drive on your TV to see how you like it. Maybe get one that you can return if you're not happy with it?

Thanks for the input. I have a Klipsch Quintet Surround and A Klipsch 10 Sub with Pioneer receiver. I have to use either the Fiber Optic or the Digital Coax for the audio though. I have to run both the HDMI and then either of the audio cables into the receiver and then just run the HDMI cable out to the tv. Iguess thats a design flaw with the receiver but I have heard good and bad about this kind of setup maybe you can help me with. Good that the audio has its own cable so it would be clearer or the bad that the HDMI is the best for both? What do you think?

Unfortunately lossless audio doesn't transmit over optical. If you want to see what the fuss is about, you'd need to either upgrade your receiver to one that can handle audio via HDMI OR if your receiver has analog multi channel inputs you could get a blu-ray player that has analog multichannel outputs.

This is very true, but keep in mind that even the lossy codecs sound better on Blu than on DVD (due to higher bitrates), so even with his current setup the OP should get much better sound.

I have a Samsung 67" LED DLP, about 9 months old and you absolutely notice the difference in picture quality with blue ray. I am using our PS3 as the blue ray player and we love it.

Yes blu-ray is night and day difference for my DLP Samsung even though i run 720p on a 50inch. The difference is most noticeable on DLP's compared to LCD or Plasmas (my dad has a 52inch sony xbr lcd very clear dvd picture). Dvd pictures looks like your watching a VHS on a DLP when comparing to Blu-ray. I highly suggest you make the jump.

I've had a Samsung DLP for 2 1/2 years and its breathtaking. Yes, LCD/Plasma are better (inch-by-inch), but when you consider that few LCD/Plasma models are available over 60" and that the smaller the TV, the closer you must sit to see 1080p, this is a big factor to me.

hey jmr, of course you should get a blu-ray player! Here's some pics I took of my Samsung DLP 61" a while back. Model HLS-6187W (isf by Avical). Over 6,000 hours and still breathtaking!

Indeed. Blu-Ray is awesome on my 1080p RPTV. And even better with my 7.1 Home Theater system. You're missing half of the enjoyment if you don't have the HD audio along with the HD video !

There's no question about it that it will be dramatically better and also folks got to get off this myth about BD discs costing more than DVD's. They aren't anymore and in fact more and more BD's are coming with a DVD copy as well so if you're like most people and only have one BD player, you now have a DVD copy to watch on other sets. Disney was the first company to do this and it was genius.
