Do you know the TIME it takes to transform a Bluray to Normal Rez? LOL, they are already TONS of group that does that and it's widely available on torrent site..

That's piracy. There's a difference.

i've never understood the whole "backing up on my computer" thing before. don't you usually back up your computers information on an external disc? i thought that was the way it works.

There are several ways to do it... CDs, DVDs, BDs and external hard drives.

Yeah but most people that i know, who download those things, aren't interested in BluRay or HD DVD or HD audio or anything, they just download pre made 720p h264 made by some guy on the net from a BD and don't care since it's 'Free' for them.

They then process that encode to DVD or to Portable media..

Btw i'am not doing that, i got over 50 blu ray movies..

The ability to copy the format does not have much effect on which I eventually choose to support. However, flexability on number of platforms does and that is what is keeping me from adopting either at the moment. Right now it's a question of price over quality...both just as attractive to me.

As far as backing up, I typically want to be able to do so before the discs get over 5 years old. Several of my older CDs will not play anymore and a few of my DVDs are aging (8 years). More than likely any encryption/copy protection can be overided in a few years so I'm not really worried about that in the long run.

No there's not. If you own the disc it doesn't matter if you're the one that rips it to your drive and convert it, or if someone else does it and you download it. If you don't own the disc, it's piracy.

It doesn't matter because downloading a movie over the internet without authorization is illegal regardless of if you own the movie or not. A lot of people don't know that they are also uploading at the same time. So it's not really recommended.

I say just to HD-DUD and when you realized that your format is dead don't come back here crying stating that you had made a big mistake a year from now like Paramount with HD-DUD.
No need to get hostile about it, but you do have a point kaliraver69. lets see if we can set him (blurip) straight. first of all, he still hasn't explained his position against bluray. BD+ calling it an anti consumer strategy. BD+ isn't against consumers, its against those who don't respect other people's work, people who put in many hours, and sweat to accomplish something. their work is being violated by those who don't have respect for it. so i don't blame fox to pulling this off. as a matter of fact i support FOX 100% on their decision to pull this off. i also don't see the point of ripping the films off, especially if you bought them. and this is my personal perspective about this that it isn't quite PIRACY, but you are helping or contributing to it. you are giving some the ability to get into the network and rip those right off your computer. something else i don't understand, if you like HDDVD, and you got a problem with Bluray, why are you posting here at bluray.com? I apologize if i seem to be insulting you somehow, but i am not, you haven't specified why you posted here. and don't tell me its because of BD+, because it sounds like you are trolling.

It's no more illegal than violating the DMCA by ripping the movie to your hard drive for use on your ipod. I'd actually say that you'd have a better case for the downloading than the ripping, with the one caveat that as long as you don't upload you're not distributing. (and yes, uploading can be disabled)

The problem is, the movie studios all have an anti-piracy division to track your internet activities. They will send an e-mail to your internet provider to let them know what you did. Especially if you upload them. yes, I know uploading can be disabled. However, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that most people are clueless when it come to torrents and P2P softwares. Uploading is often enabled by default upon the installation of most softwares.

So, I would say people are better off extracting the movie off the disc rather than downloading it off the internet.

Keep an open mind, because there are a lot of good movies in the blu-ray stable.
I read a post here a few months ago that BD discs can potentially crack on the edges?

I own over 60 BD movies and personally haven't had any disc issues - also, my 2 year old daughter cannot reach my collection. She does, however, beat the hell out of her own DVD collection.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ???????????????????

What's the point of reducing a high-def Blu-ray to an SD format like Divx or Xvid? That is ridiculous. If you are going to pirate something and "MP3" it down, then do it to an SD DVD.

And I don't mean to say I am supporting piracy I'm not. But it doesn't make sense to use a high-def source to create lo-def videos.

The resolution isn't relevant to the subject here. Mainly, it's more to do with consumer rights and copyright holders' rights. Some consumers like to be able to make a back-up copy of a movie they bought and put them on an iPod or a portable video player with the ability to playback several formats which may not include Blu-ray or HD DVD without the intention of distributing them to the public.

It's only piracy if you distribute the copies without authorization. How are you stealing if you already own it to start with? People are legally entitled to copy a movie they bought without the intention of distributing it in any form to your friends, family members and the internet.

It's only the encryption that is illegal to break through. The real reason why it's illegal is to prevent a public distribution of the bootlegged copies. They don't really care what you do with it as long you don't upload it to the internet or sell it on the streets. Do you think they would really place someone under arrest for making a back-up copy?

They might not---but they'd certainly be within the law to do so, since it's illegal to break the encryption.

Not film-related, but a single mother of 2 was today ordered to pay up $222,000 for illegally sharing 24 songs through Kazaa.
http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline...oman-must.html

Seems they could have picked a more transparently felonious pirate...

Perhaps you are going on a flight and want to watch your movies on a laptop. I don't care about resolution watching a movie on my laptop, portable dvd player, ipod, etc.

I understand the love for all things Blu on this site, but I have never seen so many people praising copy protection.
