What's the point of reducing a high-def Blu-ray to an SD format like Divx or Xvid? That is ridiculous. If you are going to pirate something and "MP3" it down, then do it to an SD DVD.

And I don't mean to say I am supporting piracy I'm not. But it doesn't make sense to use a high-def source to create lo-def videos.
The resolution isn't relevant to the subject here. Mainly, it's more to do with consumer rights and copyright holders' rights. Some consumers like to be able to make a back-up copy of a movie they bought and put them on an iPod or a portable video player with the ability to playback several formats which may not include Blu-ray or HD DVD without the intention of distributing them to the public.

It's only piracy if you distribute the copies without authorization. How are you stealing if you already own it to start with? People are legally entitled to copy a movie they bought without the intention of distributing it in any form to your friends, family members and the internet.

It's only the encryption that is illegal to break through. The real reason why it's illegal is to prevent a public distribution of the bootlegged copies. They don't really care what you do with it as long you don't upload it to the internet or sell it on the streets. Do you think they would really place someone under arrest for making a back-up copy?
