Sony: "M$ spent a lot of money for FFXIII and it won't help them"

Sony: Microsoft 'Spent A Lot of Money' for FFXIII and It Won't Help Them

One of the bigger surprises from last week's E3 was that Microsoft managed to land a deal with Japanese RPG powerhouse Square Enix to bring its highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII to the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe. Many had thought the game would stay PS3 exclusive (and it is still in Japan), but despite losing exclusivity in the West, Sony doesn't believe Microsoft ultimately gains much from the announcement.

"What you have with Final Fantasy XIII is a lot like what they've paid for with GTA. It's not an exclusive on their platform. It's now a cross-platform game. And I think if you look at how GTA behaved in the marketplace and how it drove — or didn't drive — either console, that's what I'm talking about," Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told MTV Multiplayer.

"Consumers responded to GTA on the PS3 just as they did on the 360. And it becomes a bit of a jump ball. But it didn't rise the tide for them," he continued. "And I think if you fast forward to when Final Fantasy XIII comes out I think you're going to have millions of people who grew up playing Final Fantasy on the PlayStation playing it on a PlayStation 3. They spent a lot of money, I'm sure, to get Final Fantasy onto the 360 but at the end of the day it's on our platform as well. Which is why we focus on, 'Let's look at what happens when you have Metal Gear Solid on your platform' ... when the NPD numbers come out ... I think you'll see the value of what a real exclusive title does and how it raised the bar for PS3 versus 360."

Dille also commented on the global battle with Microsoft, and he fully believes that Sony now has the upperhand – and developers are starting to realize it. "Developers know they have to amortize that investment over a global marketplace and the best place to do that is on a PlayStation format," he said. "Because if you look at the global footprint, PlayStation 3 dominates in Japan where the 360 is really irrelevant. In Europe, the PlayStation 3 is already past the 360. And in the United States you have a dogfight. You've got PlayStation 3 and 360 going at it and we've swung the momentum our way outselling the 360 during the first half of the year. So back to the third-party community, they're looking at what's going on, they're realigning their development resources to exploit PS3 and I think they understand that if they want to have a global return on their investment, PlayStation 3 is the only place they're going to get it."

Interesting, but his point of GTA, didnt GTA on 360 outsell the PS3 version? I dont recall a jump in system sales for EITHER system that month.

thats the point, MS instead of trying to get there sales are trying to slow PS3s sales, its a very pointless cowardly and dishounerable tactic, that does nothing for you

Thats the point he was trying to make, hence the MGS4 numbers make the sales numbers spike rather than GTA4 doing nothing for either.

Yes it has outsold the PS3 version. 4.2 million compared to 5.4 million I believe. Still pretty great numbers for the ps3 and hardly the a**kicking that microsoft was screaming about when they got their precious 'exclusive content'. IMO he made the his point. PS3 is holding steady and taking the lead

What about Devil May Cry 4? Didn't that sell more on the PS3? And it is true that it won't really change the momentum in any region because the 360 version is not going to be sold in Japan and because of the history between VII and XII (XI not included) on Sony's consoles. I think that it will swing in the PS3 direction just like DMC4.

I dont think it is right to simply pass off businesses bribing each other at the consumer's expense

If nobody ever complans or steps up it will only get worst

But the article is correct, FFXIII will sell poorly on the 360 compared to the PS3, I can see the ratio being 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1 in PS3's favor.

However much money Microsoft gave to Square for this won't be worth it in the end like the GTA IV DC

In an interview with 1UP, co-producers Shinji Hashimoto and Yoshinori Kitase for Final Fantasy XIII spoke about the upcoming RPG. They reiterated that FFXIII will not be delayed in Japan due to the 360 version. They will complete the PlayStation 3 version first then port the game to the Xbox 360 during localization for English speaking territories. The most cryptic statement though, is when Hashimoto is asked about Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, he replies "You can look forward to the upcoming invite-only fan event DKΣ3713, where we'll have a major announcement that will shock the fans in attendance."

So whats the shocking announcement this time? Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation 3 or maybe Xbox 360? We'll have to wait until the beginning of August to find out.

Any smart business man would put plants somewhere where they can avoid UAW. That is one of the main reasons Ford and GM are at 50+ year low on the stock market right now..

Now let me ask you this.. are the people working in the US plant for Honda, Toyota, Subaru mistreated? I think not... Are they getting $150 to turn a wrench, no. Do they fund a multi-million dollar salary for the union suit... nope.

Wait... how many cars made my GM and Ford are actually made in the US now? Not too many. They are all made in Canada and Mexico, why is that again.... oh yeah, to avoid UAW union fees and labor rates.
