Love Malick's work. Just wish they would release his films on BD,The Thin Red Line I can watch over and over again.

Paul Thomas Anderson's "Hard Eight", although he did two shorts before this, Hard Eight is his first full feature. One of my favorite scenes in a film is when John C Reiley is leaning up against the wall and his lighter ignites in his pocket. Also I'm a huge fan of Philip Hoffman and Anderson has put him in I think all of his movies.

Katherine Hardwicke "Thirteen"

Chris Weitz " American Pie " Uncredited as co-director.

John Carpenter "Dark Star" same thing he did a few shorts but I believe this would count as his first feature film.

Amy Heckerling "Fast Times at Ridgemont High"

John Hughes "Sixteen Candles" Love John's films, very sad he died so young, but his films are classics and will be watched forever.

Keeping with the Hughes I would also say the Hughes Brothers "Menace to Society"

Damn as I'm writing and posting the Hughes Bros. was posted so +1 on that

Agreed on Malick and P.T.A. I don't remember Hoffman being in Hard Eight or Punch Drunk Love and i know he's not in There Will Be Blood, but it does seem he put Hoffman on the map, so to speak.

Memento was not Nolan's first film. The Following is Nolan's first, which I would add to one of the better directorial debuts. A great movie.

Hoffman's short role in Hard Eight was so dam funny. He was also funny in Punch Drunk Love as well.

Darren Aronofsky for Pi.

I'm at work, I'll have to think about this.

Since Orson Wells was already mentioned.

I will throw in there one of CZAR's favorites.

James Cameron - The Terminator (1984)

And no...Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981) dosen't count.

.

He had a very small cameo in Hard Eight, and a small role in Punch Drunk Love as a commercial mattress salesman. You're right though he wasn't in There Will Be Blood. The performance by Hoffman that made me go WOW this guy is talented is when he played opposite DeNiro in Flawless.
I agree with your point with Anderson putting him on the map, sure Hoffman was the funny guy in Twister but it wasn't till Boogie Nights and Magnolia that he started to become more recognized.
I wouldn't be suprised to see Hoffman get into directing, I think he would do well.

Citizen Kane was not his first directed film. I don't count The Hearts of Age because it is only 8 minutes, but Too Much Johnson is 40 minutes and should count. Citizen Kane was his first full length film though.

I think probably the best modern debut. It is incredible to see that film knowing that it was his first directed film--he already had a sense of style and everything is just mind-blowing.

That would be why I think Citizen Kane is a good choice

Great choice, although I am unfamiliar with the short films. I guess I would have to count it and as such, would have to count Citizen Kane too since "feature film" kind of implies full-length.
