No, I'm not dead!
Sorry for the long delay, but over the past two weeks I have had to deal with some personal issues that have come up. No, my name isn't Tiger Woods. Have you guys waited too long for this? Yes. I'm sorry for it, it was never my intention for you guys to have to wait for three weeks for this thread to take off. However, some stuff that's happened over the past few weeks needed my full attention and sought to take care of personal matters first (I left for Lawrence around November 20 and stayed until the 28th). I can tell you right now though that I will most likely not do a list for December and January may be on hold as well. You guys didn't think I was going to leave you hanging, was I? ![]() Anyways, I'm glad that we can finally get around to this thread. You guys know how this thread works, I'll unveil a little bit at a time, like this: 25-21 20-16 15-11 10-6 5-3 2-1 You guys have waited long enough, let's finally do this! ![]() |

25. The Abyss - This is a strong story with good acting. Ed Harris does a great job. I'll definitely grab this when it is released on blu and it bears repeat viewings.
24. The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) - Despite its age, this was a very well done movie. The spacecraft and Gort didn't look that good, but the story and acting are strong. Most 50s sci-fi movies were laughable, but this rose above them. 23. The Prestige - Arguable whether this is sci-fi and it certainly doesn't have most of the things usually associated with the genre. A superb film of course. 22. Predator - Seemed good at the time, but felt disappointing the last time I saw it. Maybe it's because the transfer was weak and I was focusing on that more than the movie? Nothing serious here, it's just another vehicle for Arnie. Enjoyable and refreshing that he took some punishment, but a forgettable movie ultimately. 21. The Fifth Element - Another one that disappointed on a recent viewing. Not nearly as good as I remembered it. Yeah it's fun if you don't need to think. Worth owning, but another run of the mill caper. |

20. Children of Men - A blind buy and I have only seen it once. Some effective moments such as overhearing the opening TV broadcast. I like the acting. The story was very good as far as it went, but felt a bit like an incomplete snapshot to me. I'll certainly watch it again though.
19. Sunshine - Another blind buy that I have only seen once. Good and worth repeat viewings, but not great. I am glad I own it. 18. Dark City - Has an atmosphere all its own and the acting is strong. I enjoyed this story a lot and will watch it many times over the coming years. Some interesting ideas. 17. Wrath of Khan - One of the better Star Trek movies, and possibly the best with the original crew. They can't act though. It's a fun movie that I am sure I will watch several times, but there's nothing groundbreaking here. 16. Return of the Jedi - I am one of the few people that doesn't like Star Wars. The cutesy moments ruin it for me. My loss I guess? |
