Hmm... v2.50 has the same file size as v2.10. This firmware version may just contain fixes to the previously pulled v2.10.

Default 2.50

I was just poking around on their FTP server and noticed it. Its not uncommon for new updates to sit for a week or so on the FTP server before they link to it on their web site.

How do you see the files? They've always been hidden to me as this is the only thing I see:

I can see the b2b-zip directory from ftp://download.sony.com/US/ but everything else is hidden.

Default BDP-S1 Codec Addendum

I just noticed that Sony added an addendum in their BDP-S1 online manual webpage that explains a bit about how audio is different on the S1 after the 2.00 firmware update. I don't know how long its been there, so some of you may have already seen it. I thought it did a good job of explaining what you now get with the different audio settings on the unit.

Link is:

Default FTP Directory

rdodolak:

I get the same as you. The firmware directory's contents are hidden. The only way you can access its contents is to use a specific file name. That's what I did. In other words, "UPDATE_BDPS1_VER0240.EXE" wasn't there, but "UPDATE_BDPS1_VER0250.EXE" was.

By the way, last I checked all released versions of BDP-S1 firmware were still in that directory, including 2.10.

The addendum was posted around the time v2.00 was released.

I noticed that except v2.10 is a no go for me.

Chris (Pioneer rep) posted the following in the Pioneer BDP-HD1 thread over at AVS about DTS-HD HR. I wonder if this new Sony update includes such a feature.

I'm not quite sure what v2.10 did but the installation messages had changed from Download-1 and Download-2 to Flash 1 and Flash 2. I remember at the time I was installing v2.10 I noticed the change and was wondering if it was updating a different chip since the firmware version was ~10Mb larger than previous version.

I've just downloaded 2.50 and burnt it onto a DVD ready to update the player. Has anyone noticed ant tangible benefits over and above 2.10? Also, why the jump from 2.1 to 2.5 (what happened to 2.2 - 2.4)?

Can I update to 2.5 without installing 2.1?

Or do I need to do both?

Anyone had a chance to review the differences yet? I just dwnloaded it on Sat and the player still seems to be slugish in basic start up or functional command responses to me (which has really never been a problem for me, but it would be nice), plus I don't have composite or HDMI audio output to a reciever yet to be able to take advantage of TRuHD or DD+ still using coax (DD/DTS). Any reviews would be nice to hear from.

I Received this email on 10/8 if you product is registered.

Dear BDP-S1 owner,

We hope that you have been enjoying all the great high-definition Blu-ray Disc™ titles currently available, as well as the great picture quality your new Blu-ray Disc player provides for DVD playback.

A firmware update (Version 2.50) is now available for your player. The firmware update will enhance BD-Java compatibility with some BD-ROMs. In particular, it will improve a firmware compatibility issue which can cause some intermittent screen flashing with the interactive pinball game on the Blu-ray Disc version of "Surf’s Up", scheduled for release on October 9, 2007. We strongly recommend you update your player with this firmware update before playing this game.

If you wish to download the firmware update yourself, you may do so through the link below. Please make sure that your PC is equipped with a DVD burner and that you have a compatible (blank) DVD DVD-R/RW disc close at hand (other types of recordable DVDs may work, but -R/RW is recommended).

Otherwise you can request that a firmware update disc and instructions be mailed to you. After following the link below, click on “here to order the firmware update…” in the Important Notes section. You’ll be taken to our Service Request form to enter your name and address. The update disc will be mailed within 10 business days.

If you have any questions please contact Sony at 1-866-909-7669 for more information or visit the Sony support website below.

Click here for the firmware update.

Thanks again for choosing Sony and Blu-ray Disc.

Sincerely,

The Sony Blu-ray Disc Team

Stupid question...

If you have a BDP-S1, and you got a receiver that was compatible with DTSHD-MA, would that suffice, or will the player not pass on the complete signal to receiver?

Just to get the idea out there.....there will always be firmware revs, even when the feature set settles out. I believe, when the Blu-ray group revokes an encryption key or creates a new one, they will need to "inform" players in circulation.
